Tayari created real people, people I feel like I know or went to church or school with and it's always a treat when an author writes a story so complex that you're not actually sure whose side you're supposed to be on. I wasn't going to review this book because I felt like it was going to get so many reviews that mine wouldn't matter, but I stumbled upon a one-star review for this book and the reviewer simply said "I can't connect to these characters. It was mostly letters."I don't know how many of y'all can relate to a black couple in America ripped apart by a flawed justice system, but I personally got teary eyed by the second letter (the first one written by Roy). I'm only 22. I've never been married. I'm not a doll maker. I am NOTHING like these characters. But you know what? I can relate to them. As I read this story, I got incredibly emotional because I thought to myself--this is within the realm of possibility for me in my reality. This could happen to me. That's why this story was so moving to me.To the reader who inspired me to write this review because they "couldn't relate" and therefore think that's a reason to one-star a beautifully written story like this, if I wanted to read books about myself, I'd just read through my old facebook statuses. Not being able to see yourself in the characters doesn't take away from the moving story being told. Often times publishing companies are wary about releasing books like Ms. Jones' because of readers like this, but for readers like me, stories like this stay with us for weeks long after we've read the last page.I am two months into 2018 and I feel l'm going to have a very hard time finding a book that has affected me as much as this one has. Also, to the person who likened this book to a Tyler Perry show--side eyeing you and how wrong that statement was.

This book had beautiful writing in it. And that's all the good I can say about it.Basically, this is a book in which two people who were never well suited find themselves in a situation in which their ill suited relationship becomes (surprise!) more ill suited with time. And you, dear reader, get to sit through every miserable minute of their relationship crumbling to ruins.I should have known better than to read a book about a love triangle. I've read enough of them and I know that at least two people in the love triangle are heartless. I hated every single character in this book. They were all awful in their own ways. Roy was a possessive, macho jerk and Celestial seemed cold. Poor, spineless Andre. And the part where Roy comes home never seemed to end. Celestial and him had the same conversation three times. Three. And he asked Andre the same question six separate times and got the same exact answer every time and no resolution was ever reached. Listen, in real life, maybe you talk things out for a while, but I really, really don't want to read about it in excruciating detail. It's rare that I get to the end of a book and whisper, "Finally!"

My book club read this book. I will say it is well written: however, I am dismayed at how it portrayed 'an American marriage'. As an African American, I am embarrassed. I don't understand the high ratings. Marriage is about commitment, trust, love, compromise, growing and building a life together, oneness, and being there for each other when times get hard. All of this was missing from this book. Instead, there was secrets, selfishness, backstabbing, mistrust, lying, deceit, to name a few. If you like this type of thing, you will love this book.I could not relate to any of the main characters. I got so tired of Celestial and Andre, both of them got under my skin. Celestial is shallow, selfish, uncompromising, and she thinks the world revolves around her. I pegged her from the start, I knew she didn't love Roy. She will fall for any man who gives her special attention, i.e. Roy and her professor. How long will she stay with Andre? Andre pretended to be a "friend" to Roy but secretly wanted his wife. I felt sorry for Roy because of his situation but he should have seen through Celestial & Andre much sooner.I only finished this book because of the book club, it left me with negative feelings wondering if most people live this way. Sad to think.Many in my book club could not complete this book. I won't recommend this book to anyone because I didn't care for the subject matter.

Yoshitsune came of age in an era when two clans of samurai — Yoshitsune’s own Minamoto family and the Taira — clashed over control of Japan. But equally reckless are ­Yoshitsune’s own military maneuvers. It is difficult not to wince in anticipation as he attacks Taira forces from impossible vantages, outnumbered by nearly half. Before he was a legendary warrior, Yoshitsune was called “a small, pale youth with crooked teeth and bulging eyes.” He began learning archery and swordsmanship almost a decade later than was customary. How he overcame such hurdles is mostly unanswerable. Turner’s fascinating descriptions of samurai armor, weaponry and strategy help mask an inevitable haziness in the undocumented years of Yoshitsune’s training, and “probably” begins to emerge as a tiresome word. Probably he practiced first with wooden weapons; probably he first took aim at birds and deer. Yet balancing the gaps are carefully chosen details, such as the practice of blackening one’s teeth so as not to appear barbaric, that offer ­enticing glimpses into the larger culture as well as individual personalities. When Minamoto and Taira forces come head-to-head, the narrative ignites, and Turner’s prose is by turns pithy and evocative. “News of severed heads travels fast,” she remarks of a swift military response. Later, riding through the night, Yoshitsune and his men set fire to trees and houses, “their way illuminated by the misery of others.” Such violence is part of a warrior’s life, and Turner portions out just enough to satiate. Heads topple, limbs are severed, arrows pierce eyeballs, yet these facts are relayed cleanly and directly. The artwork is just as restrained. With flowing brush strokes reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy, ­Gareth Hinds enhances each chapter with maps and illustrations at once graceful, spare and muscular. Occasionally, the modernity of an otherwise apt metaphor is jarring — comparing the Kyoto nobility and the samurai to “cool kids” and “dumb jocks,” for instance. Just as often, these modern inflections inject a moment with instant accessibility. You can tell by how big the glossary, foreword, and author's notes are that the facts about Yoshitsune's life was well researched and yet this is a very harsh read. The author's can't quite come to terms to how to write about the Samurai's life, it's a bit biographical, there is some novelization but it's not quite either. This reads like a dinner conversation about Yoshitsune's life, the prose is very basic and sentences are often written as how a person might speak, I recall one sentence even has a "-wait for it!-" in the middle of a statement. It feels contrived and dumbed down, instead of writing "we can imagine during this time that the samurai might have..." just go ahead and write a historical novel, lots of authors manage to make great novels out of historical facts and a bit of imagination. This book however falls short of writing an objective biography or a great historical novel. I felt like I was being lectured about Yoshitsune's life by a kindergarten teacher.

Highly suggest this for a light quick action packed read. Well written, author has a light sense of humor that keeps the story from getting too heavy

Normally reading books is a chore for me. But this book was different, I couldn't put this book down. I highly recommend it if you are a fan of Japanese history and reading about the Samurai.

I am not at all into murder and mayhem, but I loved the book and could not put it down. I should confess that I purchased the book because the artist is a friend and also because another friend is writing a book connected to 19th century Samurai. I was thoroughly delighted with this book and have shared scans of the cover with several other friends.

Little boy I purchased this for (my nephew) love it! He said it was the best Christmas gift ever.

I just wish it was 300 pages longer. appreciated the endnotes. gotta love good endnotes.

This book was so inspiring telling of the life a man who was bullied as a child, lived in rural Ireland tending sheep and dreaming of the day he would be able to heal animals. Through years of studying, hard work, and many animal experiences he broke through to become the Supervet. He has created many prosthetic devices for small animal injuries as well as developing hardware for elbows, knees, and hips. He brings love to the world of both animal and human developing the concept of One Medicine to use his creations in both animals and humans. Incredible story and man.

If you’re looking for a blockbuster, you won’t find it here. That said, if you like reading a story in diary form then you’ll be fine.Noel does his best with his memoir but the writing failed to arrest me. It simply rolled out chapters of his life as he strove to become the vet he is today. And he’s no ordinary vet, I’ll admit. He is obsessed and sacrificial to the point of all else. As such, he has no family of his own, his life is wedded to his practice and, quizzically, finds the need to declare that he’s not gay. I find his recollections of early life terribly sad (and typically Irish) and find it no surprise that he is what he is today: a broken product of that childhood. I haven’t seen his tv shows or any of his acting gigs but I suspect that this book was a bestseller in the UK because of that.

Fitzpatrick describes himself as a vainglorious and self-obsessed super-hero who craves the spotlight. He says you can do anything if it is your passion, yet although he whines about his failure to find a satisfactory relationship, he can't seem to launch the effort to have one. Along the way, he breaks more one heart in his incessant search for recognition and applause. The real hero in the book is Helena--I hope she now realizes what a lucky escape she had. His head is full of fantasies. Give me Dr. Jeff (Rocky Mtn. Vet), anytime over this fellow. But do read this, if you're interested in seeing the real person behind the mask. Anyone want my copy of the book?

However, personal I would like to say to you, how very sorry I am that you spent 50 years of your life, rescuing those two lambs. You have rescued them times over.I cannot express how much it saddened me to see this deeply emotional broken man underneath the medical genius.So happy to read, that you finally took time off of the practice. You have arrived where you need to be! You solved the puzzle of life: why is so much more important then the how. Congratulation, Noel. You have made it. I hope your life brings you only love and happiness from now on!

I liked how he wrote about his growing up simply and with love. Its something he reminds us about, and how important it is to all of us.

I love Professor Fitzpatrick' s story. He took the pain of extreme bullying and turned it into something extraordinary. I love this man and what he has accomplished and what he does everyday to make this world a better place.

I have watched Noel Fitzpatrick on television since his days on the BBC as The Bionic Vet. Of course, now he is better known as The Supervet, star of the Channel Four programme that has been shown on prime time tv for years.From what I have seen about Noel, he really is someone very special, his dedication is clearly evident, as is his genuine love of animals, and the fact that he loves hugs.I have often wondered about who he is, the man behind the vet. What drives him to work more hours in the day than is healthy? There has never been any mention of relationships or even friends outside the vet practice, but surely there must be some life outside of it? And why does he hug pretty much everyone that he meets?Listening To The Animals answers all of those questions. Growing up on an Irish farm was clearly tough and taught Noel some valuable lessons about hard work, although I think that most people will agree that the hours that he puts in are not healthy. The bullying that he suffered was heartbreaking to read, how lonely and isolated he felt as a little boy with only a farm dog to talk to about his worries. I loved how he knew from so early on that he wanted to be a vet and my goodness I’m not sure that I’ve ever heard of anyone working harder than he did to reach his goal. Serious respect to the man, whatever you may think of him, he is someone that will not be beaten and if one way of reaching his goal doesn’t work then he will find another way. Some of his stories were hilarious and had me chuckling away as I read.I enjoyed reading about some of his hobbies that he loved and learnt from, although all fell to the wayside as work took over his life. And we also heard about relationships, here he was very honest with us, I’m not sure that I really needed to know how old he was when he lost his virginity, but it was an interesting chapter.I also had no idea what went into building his practice, both in sweat and tears, but also money and debt. I told someone that I had read the book and the only thing that they said was ‘He must be so rich.’ I may have thought the same, but now I know better. He is not in the job for the money, it really is all about the animals.He talked a lot about his love of Kiera, a little dog that he shares with a vet nurse because he is aware that his lifestyle is not one that would be fair for a dog. The relationship between man and their dog is a complex one, one that I think is often dismissed by people who have never had a dog and even some who have, but what makes Noel such an amazing vet is that he totally understands this. In fact, I think that he has a better understanding of that love and connection and how important it is than most people. I have a dog and I’ve been lucky enough to have had two other dogs who sadly died from old age, all three were part of my family but I am sure that I could not articulate the depth of the feeling that I have or have had for my dogs as well as Noel has.At the time of writing the book, it appeared that Noel was single, I’ve always had a bit of a ‘thing’ for him, so if you’re reading this Noel and fancy meeting up then do get in touch!

I love all of Noels TV shows and anxiously awaited the release of his book. I couldn't put it down and was again reminded what an amazing man he is. He has dedicated his life to animals and reading about his early life and hunger for knowledge was truly inspiring. A knighthood surely awaits this incredibly humble Irishman.
