Moonbeam just wants to know what happened to her mother.AFTER THE FIRE is a powerful, compelling story of a girl on the brink of adulthood who knows nothing but life inside the abusive cult, what happened before and during the fire and how Moonbeam is surviving AFTER THE FIRE. Will Hill kept my interest for most of the story, but I skimmed the parts of the cult doctrines and the nitty-gritty details of the teachings because that level of detail was not material to Moonbeam’s journey.One red flag I can’t overlook is when the psych hospital put the survivors together for unsupervised social interacted. Although doctors observed behind a two-way mirror, a sexual assaulter would NEVER be allowed to be alone with a victim, particularly a younger girl. This made me a cringe and distracted me from the storytelling. As much as I enjoyed AFTER THE FIRE, the entire book was basically Moonbeam recounting cult life before and after. Moonbeam’s psychiatric treatment took a backseat to the agent’s questions. I wish Hill had done better research of psych hospitals and PTSD treatment.AFTER THE FIRE is a compelling, yet flawed book.

Will Hill doesn't pull punches in After the Fire, and that's a good thing. The book begins in the chaotic environment of a siege by the government on a religious compound only referred to as The Base by the young narrator. These undiluted scene then plunge the reader into the equally disorienting madness of a hospital trauma room where the narrator is being treated, unwillingly, by doctors for burns and other injuries. The narrative then segues into our narrator--now known as Moonbeam--uncovering the details of her life within The Base, the beliefs of the Holy Church of the Lord's Legion, the rise of Father John, and the events surrounding the siege and subsequent fire through a series of therapy sessions and flashbacks.Moonbeam proves to be a detailed narrator of her life. She candidly discusses her life within the Legion, including her own mother's lobbying of Father John to take Moonbeam as one of his Future Wives. She tells of her crush on Nate, a mysterious stranger who arrives at The Base one day, and who disappears in the night a few years later. She recounts her impressions of Luke, the first baby born inside The Base and who eventually becomes her archenemy within the Legion. She talks of her belief in Father John and the Legion, and then her questioning of everything she's been taught once her mother is Banished and branded a Heretic by Father John.The timeline of After the Fire isn't told in a linear fashion. Moonbeam skips around while trying desperately to avoid telling everything she knows of the events that occurred during the siege and fire. Interspersed with scenes of her encounters with fellow fire survivors--including Luke--the full scope of Moonbeam's story is revealed slowly and through layers upon layers of deceit by both herself and others. When the full truth is finally revealed, Moonbeam's and the other survivors' journeys seem all the more remarkable as the reader is once again reminded that Moonbeam and her Brothers and Sisters are still only children.Will Hill weaves a fascinating thriller that keeps you wanting to read the next page. At no point did I feel the narrative dragging or unraveling at any pace other than the one set by Hill. Definitely worthy of a solitary read but even better if chosen for a book club discussion setting.

I enjoyed this read immensely! I found the author's style and syntax enjoyable and smooth. The plot line was compelling and thought-provoking. I teared up a couple of times, thinking of the lure and control of cults (and even some religions...).Get it, you won't regret it.

The two popular translations of ‘Crime and Punishment’ before the 1993 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, were by Constance Garnett and David McDuff. The Pevear/Volokhonsky translation became my favourite – until Oliver Ready’s translation came along. Not knowing a word of Russian, I declare my favourite only by the enjoyment I derived from reading the book in English.Many things may indeed be lost in translation, and many others get misrepresented but we may not know. The result of reading only the English versions is that one’s choice is largely subjective. Compared to the Garnett version, the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation seems very modern – until Ready’s came along. Little things like changing ‘had not’ to ‘hadn’t’ renders Ready’s version not only a little more modern but also more informal. That is not to say that the atmosphere of old Russia is lost. Ready uses ‘fibs’ for ‘lies’ (Pevear/Volokhonsky) in one passage.Ultimately, the reader has to decide for himself which style he enjoys more. Here is a comparison from one of my favourite passages (there are many) from the book. I set out first the Pevear/Volokhonsky version then the Ready version:“What do you think?” Razmumikhin shouted, raising his voice even more. “You think it’s because they’re lying? Nonsense! I like it when people lie! Lying is man’s only privilege over all other organisms. If you lie- you get to the truth! Lying is what makes me a man. Not one truth has ever been reached without lying fourteen times or so, maybe a hundred and fourteen, and that’s honourable in its way; well, but we can’t even lie with our minds! Lie to me, but in your own way, and I’ll kiss you for it. Lying in one’s own way is almost better than telling the truth in someone else’s way; in the first case you’re a man, and in the second – no better than a bird. The truth won’t go away, but life can be nailed shut; there are examples. (Pevear/Volokhonsky)‘Now what are you thinking?’ cried Razumikhin, raising even more. ‘That it’s their lies I can’t stand? Nonsense! I like it when people lie. Telling lies is humanity’s sole privilege over other organism. Keep fibbing and you’ll end up with the truth! I’m only human because I lie. No truth’s ever been discovered without fourteen fibs along the way, if not one hundred and fourteen, and there’s honour in that. But our lies aren’t even our own! Lie to me by all means, but make sure it’s your own, and then I’ll kiss you. After all, lies of your own are almost better than someone else’s truth: in the first case you’re human; in the second you’re just a bird! The truth won’t run away, but life just might – wouldn’t be the first time.Ready’s version has a table of chronological events and a fresh, inspiring introduction that will help the first-time reader understand and appreciate the context of ‘Crime and Punishment’

I do not know what my review can add to the Brothers Karamazov, but I will put in a few of my words. I have now read this book six times through and every time I am simply amazed at the complexity of vision that Dostoevsky brought to the page. My copy of the book is littered with page numbers written in the margins that connect the dots between all of the recurring scenes, ideas, images, phrases, and philosophies. It has taken years of sustained thought to be able to draw all of these connections, which makes it somewhat unbelievable that Dostoevsky was able to write it in the time frame that he did. Because of this, though, I have found this translation to be the only reasonable choice for the serious student. Many earlier translations ironed out potentially awkward phrasings, and thereby destroyed the parallelism that was being masterfully established.I have shed so many tears on the pages of my copy of this book that I am surprised it is still holding up as well as it is. There is a sensitivity and beauty to this text that I have never been able to find anywhere else, even in other works by Dostoevsky. It is, quite simply, the most masterful examination of agape (active love), faith, and justice, and redemption that I have ever encountered in my life, in philosophy, history, literature, film, or otherwise. There are no words to offer that can capture how profoundly this book has changed me for the better.

Most people know that The Brothers Karamazov is an amazing novel, so I will only be criticizing the translation; however, I haven't read any other translations to verify my knowledge on the subject, and I would suggest going getting samples of different translations in order to best suit your needs.The Richard Peaver & Larissa Volokhonsky translation of The Brothers Karamazov is good. It's being marketed as the best, but it really isn't. There is not a 'best' translation of Dostoyevsky, or really, any other Russian author I've researched; no, there isn't a 'best' translation of a book that I know of. To my understanding the Peaver translations usually stick incredibly close to the original source material, which is a double edged sword; most people want a translation that doesn't loose something or other in translation. This one is very close to doing so, but as I said it's a double edged sword; they leave in the syntax, and a very foreign syntax at that. This can cause problems for a casual reader, but it wasn't a problem for me. What really matters is the readers personal preference. I will add the first sentence of the P&V, McDuff, and Garnett translations to see which one you'd most like:"Alexei Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of a land owner from our district, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, well known is his own day (and still remembered among us) because of his dark and tragic death, which happened exactly thirteen years ago and which I shall speak of in its proper place." - P&V"Aleksey Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of a landowner in our district, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, so noted in his time (and even now still recollected among us) for his tragic and fishy death, which occurred just thirteen years ago and which I shall report in its proper context." - McDuff"Alexey Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, a landowner well known in our district in his own day, and still remembered among us owing to his gloomy and tragic death, which happened thirteen years ago, and which I shall describe in its proper place." - GarnettMoving on to the edition I have. It's ISBN is 978-0374528379, but it is the best selling edition as of 8/1/2017; you probably won't have any trouble finding it. This paperback is a great durable edition. I kept it in my backpack for school each day for basically the entire second semester without too much serious wear (check the photos to judge yourself). The font is big enough to read well without straining your eyes... or at least it was for me. It's still holding together nicely is what I'm trying to say. The binding is glued, too; if you didn't know. This edition has a cover in which I will describe as rough-soft feeling; I enjoyed holding it in my hands.Finally, sorry for the poor camera quality. The soda can piece is there to show how big the text is in comparison. The torn piece on the back is from a mishap I am accountable for not the book, although it says something about the books durability; it happened near the end of my usage with it.

This is a really great book (review is for Small Freshwater Creatures by Olsen).Similar to the "Golden Guides" nature series of introductory books for the hobbiest, for a given organism there is a nicely detailed drawing, a brief description of life history, and a genus / species when possible.The book is organized by Order and sometimes Family, depending upon the variety of organisms in a given taxon. It is mostly meant to be a pictorial guide for non-scientists but will be a bit of a bridge to actual scientific reference books on identifying aquatic insects and is useful in my opinion to grade/ middle/ high school applications here in the USA.The species listed are targeted to Northern Europe and at least at this time the Amazon description clearly indicates this fact, and the physical book itself also clearly states it is for N. Europe. This should _not_ in my opinion prevent the Freshwater book from being very useful for those of us in N America or Canada- a diving beetle is a diving beetle, a water scorpion is a water scorpion, and you would not be obtaining species information from a book like this in any event. It is a great guide to help you ID which Family of organism you are looking at, and in some instances the genus and even species will be the same in the USA/ Canada as in Europe.

Nothing said that this book was about Northern European "small woodland creatures". It has little value here in North America, let alone NY State. There are lots of pictures (over 900), but most don't apply. There is no table of contents. The book is truly not a field guide, its hard covered, no easy "thumbing" thru to find certain critters. It is organized haphazardly and its index is primarily in the latin by species and genus. So if you're into European critters and know them by their latin name...this book might be good for you. For the lay person looking for a reference book to take on hikes, etc. FUGGEDABOUDIT! Did you realize this was the same review as Small Woodland Creatures? Well the same folks wrote both books and did them both in the same style...so they deserve the same review. Two thumbs down!

Where to even begin! This book only has 12 manufacturers with 2-8 products each, stuff like ducolax, pedilax, zantac pin worm medicine, metamucil and that's about 1/4th of the products listed!. It has maybe 2-4 pages for each of the first sections, each jumping page listing by 100, so that 20 pages in you're on page 501. There's about 40 pages that list what you have on a package insert on stuff like listed above. There's maybe 15 herbs, mostly stuff like above or Hyland,s earache medicine or nerve tonic, teething tablets, ivy block, etc. Very, very incomplete listing of products. Most of the book is a product comparison ,lists that just has pages of a product' main ingredient and dosage on things like excedrin, Tylenol, topical decongestants, laxatives, hemorrhoidal creams. If you want to read the package insert on stuff like"snorestop max strength chewable tablets", then this is the book for you. If it carried major brands and was thicker than a pencil, then it may be a little more noteworthy. I wanted info that I could use on herbs & supplements. This has next to nothing to offer. Very disappointed.

Very pleasantly surprised the PDR was a hard cover. I had ordered a used one which was soft cover. Hard cover makes a big difference. Would recommend specifying that detail in description.

I read Ellefson's book with great anticipation. I am a lifelong Megadeth fan and, since the mouthpiece of that band has always been Dave Mustaine (and rightfully so, I suppose), I was eager to see what Ellefson had to say. Not just about Megadeth, but about his journey to sobriety. I share many similarities to his background - we are the same age, raised in rural, close-knit families with normal, hard-working, loving parents and with formal religious training...we both got in trouble with drugs and alcohol at a young age, but also cleaned up our acts at a young age (myself in '88 and he in '90). I enjoy these stories of how my Heavy Metal Heroes keep that sobriety too.I have to say when I first read the book, I was somewhat underwhelmed. He almost made getting sober seem "too easy" and it seemed like he was often "holding back" his true feelings about Mustaine, the band's career, and his exit from and reunion with the band. SO...I decided to re-read Dave Mustaine's biography that came out in 2010, to see what was "missing" before I made my judgement. (I assume if you're a Megadeth fan, you've read it - if not, go buy it now!)Well after re-reading Mustaine's book, for sure there are 2 very different opinions of many things that happened. The most glaring example is how Mustaine claims he PAID Ellefson to go to his drug rehab meetings "and before I knew it, he was clean and sober, I accidentally 12-stepped Junior". Well, Ellefson admits to nothing of the kind! Also, Mustaine describes in great detail Ellefson's lawsuit and the bad blood between them at the time....and Ellefson barely gives that a paragraph. I got the impression he is either so "over it" he doesn't want to talk about it anymore, or, possibly the settlement forbids him to talk about it. Well, you can compare and judge for yourself.The GOOD thing is, after reading the 2 books, I can see how Ellefson was able to embrace and stick with sobriety for good much easier that Mustaine did. It goes to show that if you have a solid background in life, both family and religion, it is something to help you know right from wrong, believe in yourself and be strong---Mustaine had none of those advantages; no wonder he relapsed so many times! To Ellefson's credit, his book offers no negativity toward Mustaine or anyone else for that matter. He shares a completely positive message, and takes full responsibility for his life.Here is a man that went from a naive kid from the midwest to a metal superstar--he deserves every success he has earned, and in doing so, it is clear to see that he is one of the greats, not just as a musician, but as a man. Mustaine should thank his lucky stars to have met him. Love him or hate him, I think Mustaine would have been a success no matter who was backing him up, but MEGADETH would not have been superstars without Ellefson all those years.In sum, Mustaine also made a comment that Ellefson is not someone you'd want in your foxhole, mostly because he is not a fighter (in the physical sense). I disagree. Ellefson is a fighter of a different kind, and one of the first people I'd want with me in a band, on a team, or as a friend. Read and enjoy!

I really enjoyed getting a personal look into the life of Dave Ellefson from Megadeth. He is a very grounded man. Some readers might be annoyed by the attention he gives to his faith, but personally, I really liked hearing about how his faith is the bedrock for his long term sobriety. I get the feeling that he is a very caring man and down to earth, as evidenced by the great many people who have said nice things about him over the years.

An excellent story. It chronicles Dave's journey from Midwest roots to the L.A. metal scene. His bizarre introduction to the other Dave in Megadeth. Then eventually the horrible dependency on heroine and alcohol. The tact put forth while being simultaneously candid is well done. Also covered is: the legal battle, the years between both Megadeth stints, and the really cool burying of the hatchet. Friendship and a shared faith end up still having a place in the World.

Any fan of Megadeth will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book. While never a substance abuser myself, I have worked with many, and Dave describes his struggles so well you will feel like you are right there with him. He never shies away from telling you how difficult drug addiction is to beat or the rewards once he became clean and sober.. it is very honest and insightful as to both experiences. It is nice to see that Dave is as kind and open as he is talented. In short, it is very well written, insightful, revealing, and honest. One cannot ask for more than that.I also have to admit that I am a HUGE fan of Megadeth, especially of Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefson, so this book was a true treat for me to read. I am so happy to see Megadeth back as strong as ever musically and stronger than ever personally.

I love this book. Dave's got a great story and I enjoyed reading it. Mr. Ellefson shops occasionally in a store where I work and I was able to have him autograph it for me which made it even better. I'm not even that big of a Megadeth fan but after hearing about his life and then reading the book, I'm so glad I picked it up. I'm a big fan of reading this type of book from the bands that I grew up with.So glad to hear about Dave becoming a Christian as well. I was a rock n roll kid who became a Christian too.

It's a fast read and an incredible inside look at the life of David Ellefson, his struggles with being the typical rock star in the 80's with substance abuse, and how he used faith to recover and rebuild his life. David is a class act and he keeps the stories, drama, and reasons for past member's departures to a minimum. If you want those stories, read Dave Mustaine's book as well, if you haven't already. I'm really looking forward to the second book!

Read it cover to cover in two days! Dave (Junior) is a nice guy in a nasty business, and his compassion and humanity shine through in this autobiography. If anyone watches his great youtube posts from the road, DE is the kind of guy you would love to hang out with and talk to about exactly what he is writing in this book - the incredible story of Megadeth and the difficulties of surviving in the music industry. It also gives us over-aged bass players a way to live the rock star dream vicariously. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story of success and family.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading about his ups and downs and how recovery very played a huge part and still does in his life. He sounds like a great man all around, not perfect, but willing to put it out there and show his struggles and overcoming.

About the Author

Ruth Rae is a classically trained jeweler. During Ruth's tenure as a metal smith she began to experiment with other forms of media and techniques. As time has progressed Ruth's true passion has become "mixed media fiber art." Ruth's pieces are recognized for their unexpected yet elegant combinations of altered fabrics combined with found objects and words that are bound together by hand and machine stitching. Ruth's work has been featured in galleries across the country, countless art publications as well as Quilting Arts TV and she has two workshop DVDs and travels around the county teaching jewelry and fabric workshops. This has become one of my favorite books in my craft library. For the first time ever, I actually read an instructional sewing book cover to cover rather than just browsing the pretty photos. And then I started trying the projects.Layered, Tattered and Stitched: A Fabric Art Workshop has 20 different projects by mixed media artist Ruth Rae. In each project she steps you through making collages using materials such as fabric, transparencies, paper, rubber stamps, paint, wire, beads, lace and metal. Her style has the elements I adore in fabric collage - frayed edges, burns, lots of stitching in messy rows, along with fabulous texture and color combinations.She starts out with a brief 2 pages on materials, but it's enough for you to figure out what she's using and where to buy your own. She also explains how she dyes fabric or cuts certain materials. It's not in-depth, but experienced crafters and sewists will not need that level of detail.The 20 projects include things such as cards, gift wrap, a journal, wall hangings, doll & clothes, banner, apron, wrist cuff, and a photo frame. I loved her construction techniques for the apron with buttonholes rather than ties, and her book binding techniques are next up on my list of things to try. The instructions are easy to follow, although she focuses more on the techniques, not the actual materials. She expects you to create similar projects in your own style, rather than making things exactly like hers. I love that idea. But...she does provide patterns and even a couple of pages of clip art if you want to closely emulate items as pictured in the book.I was so inspired by this book, I have already made several of these projects in my own style and plan to make more stuff using techniques from the book.What I liked: * gorgeous photos of art quilt and fabric collage items * simple instructions * excellent techniques using various materials * encourages your own creativity - use the projects as a jumping off point * unique yet practical projectsWhat was missing?: * doesn't discuss layout design or color theory of collageOther things to know: * sewing techniques are not covered, it is assumed you know how to use your machine already * If you like the style of Ruth Rae, you will love the book. But if you're not a fan of the tattered style, this may not be a good book for you.

Full color photos and nice narratives. A wonderful incubator for artistic ideas. Projects from small to large using what one might have in their piece bin. I liked this very much. After reading it fully,I still peek at in several times a week. You know a book is good when you do not just stuff it away on your book shelf.

Layered, Tattered & Stitched by Ruth Rae is perfect for both the beginner and advanced textile artist. The book itself is put together beautifully, balancing the technical with the aesthetic. With over eighteen projects, Rae guides the reader with clear instructions and photographs to not only complete the projects presented, but to learn new skills and artistry to incorporate into their own artwork. The author generously shares a variety of techniques with the reader, drawing upon her experience in not only fabric, but mixed media and jewelry design. Additional tips and wisdom are sprinkled throughout the book to include safety guidelines when using certain materials, effects and products as well as a thorough list of specific tools and supplies which are needed to complete the projects. Rae also gives insight into breathing new life into the artist's existing cache and methods of up-cycling substrates into new art. Layered, Tattered & Stitched is a must have for anyone who would like to or currently works in the mixed media and fiber arts.

Being a crafter/hobbyist/fiber artist, I have always been on the lookout for instructional material that will inspire my creativity to the max. This is certainly one of those books. Miss Rae takes fabric to the next level and creates work that is useable, wearable and functional....a very gifted lady. This is one resource I will definitely have close at hand for many future projects.
