The maps are okay. A little too small for my eyesight, although the size of the book is convenient. Some of the chapters combine barrios, which has advantages and disadvantages. The bar/restaurant recommendations that we followed, which were only a few, usually turned out relatively well. They were essentially accurate and worth our time. The Argentinian words list was helpful. I was with someone from Buenos Aires who does not speak English, so she could not translate words when she used words particular to Argentina that I did not understand (I learnt Spanish in Guatemala and the Dominican Republic). So from that list I picked up some words that I would otherwise not have known. A different travel book that I got from my library had useful information about how Argentinians cook and order their steak, which is very good. They usually cook it "cocido," which literally means "cooked," and which is what North Americans would usually call medium (maybe just slightly past medium, in some instances). If you want rare or medium rare, you say "jugoso" or "a punto," respectively, and may have to convince your server. The information in this book about how many pesos per dollar is old. The black market rate was about 13.30 pesos per dollar when I was there (January 2015), while banks in the United States were offering me about 7.5 per dollar. But be careful about crime in Buenos Aires. I read recently it is the theft capital of Latin America. Some Argentinians don't trust banks and may sometimes carry around lots of cash. On the whole, I don't regret this purchase. But I'm not ecstatic with enthusiasm.

this book was just the perfect size to bring around while travelling! not very heavy, not very thick.paper quality was great.the street map and train map were very helpful!i'm really glad i bought this and brought it to my trip.we checked off a lot on the lists mainly because our online research showed generally the same must-visit places, anyway, so we ended up using this book as a constant reference.however, nothing will definitely replace just being in buenos aires and getting a better feel and enjoyment of the place, including places we definitely enjoyed exploring that were not in the book.there were places, too, that caught our attention and took pics of and later found out were in the book.the other minor lists (top argentinian wines, top cafes, etc) served very handy while walking around and had to do/buy something on the fly. or trying to figure out what to order in the restos.the top lists are not without faults, though. we agreed and disagreed to items listed in the lists but it's probably more personal preferences than anything.because most of what we saw in our online research on buenos aires and our actual discoveries while in buenos aires showed up in this book, i felt this book is 'legit." :-)in fact, i will definitely get their other top 10 books for other places.lastly, this is definitely worth buying just for the street map and train maps alone. it has maps in the book itself and has another handy, plastic foldable map u can easily put in your pocket that we constantly used. we had a gps loaded in one of our cell phones (and it helped!) but we ended up relying on these old printed maps more.

Great book!!! It had everything that I needed EXCEPT where to go to get the best deals on leather goods. I discovered after dropping $300 for a travel bag that 666 MurilloNear Palermo has 5 blocks of factories and that is the place to get real deals-NO HAGGLE!!! You get $500USD dollars bags for $30USD. It's the same place where all the shops on Florida buy their bags for cheap and mark the price up by 1000% in the tourist district. Other than that great book

Excellent Guide Book, very nicely organized around the "Top 10" Categories (Top 10 sights of Buenos Aires, Top 10 Shopping, Top 10 Restaurants, Top 10 Historical sights, etc.). The descriptions in the book reference the area on the included street map so it is easy to get around town. This book lead me to what was most important for me to see while in Buenos Aires - an Argentine Tango Show!!! Thanks to this book I found Piazzolla Tango - San Martin 170 // Florida 165 -, Buenos Aires, Argentina. My friends and I had an unforgettable evening - 30 minute Tango lesson, incredible steak dinner, all the wine we could drink, an incredible 2 hour music and dance exhibition, transportation from our hotel to the show and back - all for $68 US!!!!

Very convenient and easy to carry around. The included map that can be detached from the book and carried in one's pocket is very useful. Also the tips about places to see and things to do were very helpful. I bought two guidebooks and this was the only one I used for my weeklong trip to Buenos Aires.

Well, I got this book in plenty of time, but after studying it, I decided to leave it behind. I've been to Buenos Aires now, I've returned home, and I pulled this book out again to see if, having been there, it made more sense. Unfortunately, it doesn't, really. It's about the organization more than anything. Top 10 WHAT? is a question I still can't answer. I don't know why they called it Top 10. A lot of info in there, though. Just poorly organized, in my opinion.

As always Top 10 is in my Top 10 choices for guidebooks. Never disappoints! In the first read I was able to narrow in my choice neighborhood to stay in and start building an itinerary for a four day stay.

Hoping it would be an easy book to travel with but the top 10 categories are weird and the maps too tiny. The full size is a far superior product.

Review

“Robert Klara's The Hidden White House will give you unique insight into the building our presidents live and work in. A tour de force narrative, this detailed history will give you a one-of-a-kind look into America's most famous house.†―Newt Gingrich, New York Times bestselling author of Victory at Yorktown“Robert Klara brings the White House--its occupants, its rooms, even its swinging chandeliers--vividly to life in this gripping work of history. The book is rich with historical and architectural detail, and Klara, a brilliant storyteller, shows us why Truman's plan to restore the White House was an act not only of necessity, but of audacity.†―Jeff Shesol, former speechwriter to President Bill Clinton and author of Supreme Power: Franklin Roosevelt vs. the Supreme Court“Robert Klara has crafted an unexpected and captivating story of the overhaul of America's most famous residence. While every first family lends its own personal touch to the White House, it is usually in the form of china patterns and drapes. President Truman, on the other hand, had the place gutted―because it was threatening to collapse around him. From bathtubs to bomb shelters, Klara leaves no piece of crumbling sandstone unturned and is as astute a storyteller as he is a dogged researcher. His efforts have resulted in a rich and layered look at this unique episode in American history. Hidden White House is populated by complicated and quirky characters but Klara wisely saves the spotlight for the real star, The White House herself, as she narrowly escapes annihilation. We can be thankful she survived, imperfections and all, and that Klara has brought her story to light.†―Denise Kiernan, New York Times bestselling author of Girls of Atomic City“Money troubles, war with congress, fights with patriotic societies, an attempted assassination of the President, the building of an atom bomb shelter, lost contents – the saga of the gutting and recreation of the "Great White Jail" that is the nation's White House is as dramatic as was Truman's presidency. In Robert Klara's riveting yet scholarly account it becomes no less than the story of America, as the U.S. becomes the world's foremost superpower – with the reconstructed White House its symbolic and literal heart.†―Nigel Hamilton, author, American Caesars: Lives of the Presidents, From Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush“A delightful and informative narrative… Klara brings the reconstruction’s major players―including Truman and his family, architect Lorenzo Winslow, and contractor John McShain―to life in sharp prose, infusing this cracks-and-crevices expose with plenty of entertaining drama.†―Publishers Weekly“Robert Klara has proven the old adage to be true -- if walls could speak what stories they would tell! Ghosts. Diplomats. Washington backscratching. The Hidden White House has it all in a fabulous romp across the landscape of American history as viewed through the prism of our most iconic residence. Hats off to Klara! A beautifully written book filled with quirky characters and amazing stories.†―L. Douglas Keeney, author of 15 Minutes: General Curtis LeMay and the Countdown to Nuclear Annihilation“There's a story that when Ronald Reagan first arrived at the White House, he asked to see the ‘War Room,' presuming it looked just like the screen version from Dr. Strangelove. Which is to say, we all have our fantasies about the hidden life behind the stately white columns of America's most famous home--most of them false. Robert Klara's entertaining secret history of White House tells how it became the place we think we know but don't, proving the adage that truth can be stranger than fiction.†―Mark Lamster, architecture critic, Dallas Morning News“Robert Klara's The Hidden White House serves as a landmark study of the post-World War II redefinition of America's premier residence. Thoroughly researched and engagingly written, this book casts deserved new attention on a favorite subject, highlighting the masterful walking of the fine line between preserving an historic shrine and fabricating a modern fortress and television-ready backdrop. Whether historian, architect, or homeowner (fresh from the throes of your own renovation), The Hidden White House affords an entertaining history lesson.†―James Archer Abbott, director and curator, Johns Hopkins University's Evergreen Museum and Library; author of Designing Camelot: The Kennedy White House Restoration“Gossipy… Characters, famous and relatively obscure, flit in and out of the narrative, creating frequently humorous situations…. Enjoyable.†―Booklist“Klara's focused history will intrigue architectural history enthusiasts along with presidential history buffs and others who will appreciate a part of White House history that has been forgotten by many.†―Library Journal“In the manner of Bob Greene's Once Upon a Town or Jody Rosen's White Christmas . . . Klara charms as he informs. A little gem.†―Kirkus Reviews (starred) on FDR's Funeral Train“Klara has put together a thrilling piece of history. . . . [he] has managed to provide a fresh look at history as well as the political landscape of the twenty–first century.†―The Daily Beast on FDR's Funeral Train“Full of fascinating anecdotes. . . . This is popular history at its best: engaging, informative and insightful. It is very well written and . . . a pure pleasure to read . . . sheds welcome light on a fascinating and largely forgotten episode.†―Christian Science Monitor on FDR's Funeral Train

The Hidden White House by Robert Klara is an extremely interesting book and covers a subject that I admittedly knew very little about. President Harry Truman authorized the rebuilding of the White House in 1948 after he almost plunged through the ceiling of the Blue Room while enjoying a bath. Good that he didn't, because he would have ended up in a DAR tea party. The mansion was inspected and found to be in terrible shape. The Trumans moved to the Blair House, and the White House was gutted. The rebuilding continued from there.Mr. Klara has written a fascinating book, and I recommend it highly to any readers interested in Presidential history.

This would really be a 4.5 star review if Amazon allowed half stars. It's one of those little known facts about America's most famous residence: There have really been two White Houses; the one designed by James Hoban and built between 1792 and 1800, and the one designed by President Truman (along with White House Architect Lorenzo Winslow and the Commission on the Renovation of the Executive Mansion) that was built by John McShain between 1949 and 1952. The two structures really only share a general layout and the same four outer walls. This bit of historical trivia has always fascinated me, the construction of a modern building within a centuries-old facade, and I had been eager for a while to learn more about it.Robert Klara weaves his exhaustive research into a peppy narrative that moves along at brisk, engaging pace. He does a terrific job of exploring the scope of the problem and is quite successful at capturing the distinct voices and personalities of the various players involved in solving it. In addition to learning a lot about the White House, I learned a lot about Truman the president and Truman the man. Klara is not awestruck by his subject matter, and his book is as attuned to flaws and shortcomings as it is to triumphs. His citations are staggeringly comprehensive, and provide a great road map for the reader that wants to dig even deeper into any given aspect of the particular historic project.I only have two real complaints: 1) Sometimes, in his attempts to spice up the storytelling of what could have easily been a dry treatise, he's a bit too bold about putting himself into the heads of the participants, declaratively presenting private thoughts that can only be assumptions based on educated conclusions. He also dwells overlong at times on irrelevant bits of color, particularly Lorenzo Winslow's fascination with séances and the occult. 2) The book only includes sixteen pages of photographs in a glossy insert near the center. The photos that we do get are excellent, but the book would have benefited from even more of Abbie Rowe's incredible black and white photography, scattered throughout in context within the narrative.

I'll be forever grateful that I found this book. The White House is one of the dearest and most precious places in the country, YET, most Americans know so very little about it. Robert Klara will SHOCK you while entertaining you, as he brilliantly lets you "live" in the White House with Harry Truman while Truman has to come to grips with a little known catastrophic secret about the White House; a secret that changed the President's house forever. If you like American History (or even if you don't.... yet) this book is a must read. You will know more about the White House than almost every other American. Did you know that you can buy 225 year old, historic pieces of the White House? Either did I.

I'd seen the author interviewed on Book TV and decided to order a copy right then and there. It turned out to be one of the best gifts I'd ever given myself. I had known that Truman had spent much of his presidency in Blair House but I never understood why. Then, when Robert Klara opens the book by describing how Truman was taking a bath and almost ended up falling through the ceiling while a group of DAR ladies were sipping tea in the Blue Room below (because the physical structure of the White House was so catastrophically weak), I laughed my sides off at the image. And that was just the beginning! It's a wonderful read all the way through as he describes all the prima donna specialists involved in the reconstruction, many of whom didn't get along with each other, and makes a little known story an absolute gem to read. It almost reads like a novel, but as the old saying goes, "You can't make this stuff up!"

As a news photographer who has covered the White House for fifty-three years, I’d had the honor and good fortune to walk through the White House grounds Northwest gate, (after a tight security check), and look to my left and marvel at the magnificent building that we have for our presidents. I knew a little about the Truman restoration, certainly the assassination attempt at Blair House, but I knew very little about the nuts & bolts of the massive project that took place in Harry Truman’s only full term as president.THE HIDDEN WHITE HOUSE: HARRY TRUMAN AND THE RECONSTRUCTION OF AMERICA’S MOST FAMOUS RESIDENCE, by Robert Klara is a wonderful story about the politics and problems that President Truman faced to begin and finish a task that he thought we as Americans needed done. Lots of little details and characters make this book more than just a dull book on an aspect of American history: stories about Abbe Rowe, the crippled Interior Department line gang worker who sent First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt a photograph. The First Lady asked him to come to the White House as a photographer and he documented the entire restoration process with great care. The mystery of a hidden bomb shelter being built in the basement--bomb shelters were big about 1950. Many others, that make this book worth the reader’s time.

Amazon.com Review

In the fall of 1978 (between The Stand and The Dead Zone), Stephen King taught a course at the University of Maine on "Themes in Supernatural Literature." As he writes in the foreword to this book, he was nervous at the prospect of "spending a lot of time in front of a lot of people talking about a subject in which I had previously only felt my way instinctively, like a blind man." The course apparently went well, and as with most teaching experiences, it was as instructive, if not more so, to the teacher as it was to the students. Thanks to a suggestion from his former editor at Doubleday, King decided to write Danse Macabre as a personal record of the thoughts about horror that he developed and refined as a result of that course. The outcome is an utterly charming book that reads as if King were sitting right there with you, shooting the breeze. He starts on October 4, 1957, when he was 10 years old, watching a Saturday matinee of Earth vs. the Flying Saucers. Just as the saucers were mounting their attack on "Our Nation's Capital," the movie was suddenly turned off. The manager of the theater walked out onto the stage and announced, "The Russians have put a space satellite into orbit around the earth. They call it ... Spootnik." That's how the whole book goes: one simple, yet surprisingly pertinent, anecdote or observation after another. King covers the gamut of horror as he'd experienced it at that point in 1978 (a period of about 30 years): folk tales, literature, radio, good movies, junk movies, and the "glass teat". It's colorful, funny, and nostalgic--and also strikingly intelligent. --Fiona Webster

Stephen King was thirty-three when he wrote ‘Damse Macabre’ in 1980. At that point he had published only five major novels: ‘Carrie’ (1974), ‘Salem’s Lot’ (1975), ‘The Shining’ (1977), ‘The Stand’ (1978), and ‘The Dead Zone’ (1979). While these were the novels that cemented his early reputation, many of his most famous books would come later: ‘Firestarter’ (1980); ‘Cujo’ (1981); ‘The Running Man’ and ‘The Gunslinger’ (first book in the long-running ‘Dark Tower’ series) (1982); ‘Christine’ and ‘Pet Sematary’ (1983); ‘It’ (1986); ‘Misery’ and ‘The Tommyknockers’ (1987); ‘The Dark Half’ (1989) and so on into the 1990s and beyond. So, when SK cited his own books to illustrate concepts in Danse Macabre, he had only those first five to draw on. We can probably come up with many more—sometimes much better—examples from his later work. For instance, when SK talks about the idea of The Bad Place (haunted houses etc.) in horror fiction and film, you and I, gifted as we are with nearly forty years of hindsight. might immediately think of the Native-American burial ground in ‘Pet Sematary’ or the hellish sewer in ‘It’.‘Danse Macabre’ is very much a product of its time, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still informative and a great deal of fun to read. SK’s ideas about what makes horror “tick†are still eye-opening today; his analysis of some of the great horror novels and stories is often right on the money, and the personal anecdotes he shares along the way are nothing short of wonderful—such as in Chapter 4 when he recalls his colorful down-east character of an uncle trying to douse a new well with an applewood bough.‘Danse Macabre’ was written at a time when SK was still heavily into alcohol—at one point he casually talks about putting away fourteen beers in a single night, saying that he’d taken it “pretty easy†that night; elsewhere, he makes several matter-of-fact references to “getting pleasantly loaded…†Whether because of the booze or not, he occasionally goes off on broad, rambling tangents, which, entertaining as they can be, really seem to wander away from points that could have been made more quickly and with much greater precision. Not that there isn’t a lot of fascinating trivia and kick-ass storytelling along the detours, but I do think some of his opinions should probably be taken with a mighty grain of salt, especially when he talks about “classic†horror movies. For example, while it’s OK for a low-budget B movie from the early 1960s, I can’t see that ‘Dimentia-13’ is anywhere near as good as SK seems to remember—maybe it’s his own youthful nostalgia at play? He complains at some length about production values in the original 1942 version of Val Lewton’s ‘Cat People’ (NOT to be confused with the forgettable, exploitative re-make from 1982), but most people seeing this classic B movie for the first time probably wouldn’t notice the things that drive SK up the wall. (The original ‘Cat People’ was made during World War II, and it would have been impractical to shoot a night scene on location in a blacked-out New York City.)Also, in 1980, SK thought very little of the films of Wes Craven, based on things like ‘Last House on the Left’, ‘The Hills Have Eyes’, and ‘The People Under the Stairs’. But in his forenotes to later editions of ‘Danse Macabre’, SK, while still mostly dismissive of ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ and, particularly, the rather dull franchise it becane, does offer some grudging respect for Craven’s ‘Scream’ movies, and he practically raves about Dennis Illiadis’ 2009 re-make of ‘Last House on the Left’.All this is to say that, if you can stay with it, ‘Danse Macabre’ is a pretty rewarding read, informative, often entertaining. and well worth the effort. SK includes two appendices in the back listing 100 horror novels, as well as all the movies cited in the text. Enough to keep any healthily curious fan busy for a long time.

Originally released in 1981, Danse Macabre is a non-fiction book in which Stephen King tells the history of horror literature through the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as present the main influences on his work. The book also brings a very interesting theory about the importance of horror stories and the role they have in “exercising†our primal and destructive urges so that we can live in society.“Why do you want to make up horrible things when there is so much real horror in the world? The answer seems to be that we make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones.â€â€œ[Horror] offers us a chance to exercise (that’s right; not exorcise but exercise) emotions which society demands we keep closely in hand. The horror film is an invitation to indulge in deviant, antisocial behavior by proxy—to commit gratuitous acts of violence, indulge our puerile dreams of power, to give in to our most craven fears. Perhaps more than anything else, the horror story or horror movie says it’s okay to join the mob, to become the total tribal being, to destroy the outsider.â€â€œMonstrosity fascinates us because it appeals to the conservative Republican in a three-piece suit who resides within all of us. We love and need the concept of monstrosity because it is a reaffirmation of the order we all crave as human beings . . . and let me further suggest that it is not the physical or mental aberration in itself which horrifies us, but rather the lack of order which these aberrations seem to imply.â€Fictional violence is often used as an escape goat for true violence, but violence on books, film, games; it exists because society is violent. Trying to hide this fantasy violence to avoid true violence is like trying to cure fever by banning thermometers. As a writer, I also like a lot the no-bullshit attitude Stephen King has towards writing and literature. To a younger reader many of the references of series from the 1950s and 1970s may be lost, but even in these cases I felt King brought an intriguing personal insight that made the reading worth my time. Danse Macabre seems less like a TED Talk about the history of horror and more like a conversation in a bar. Only a conversation with a genius three times more intelligent than you and that knows the theme thirty times better than you, and is completely in love with it.“We’re all mentally ill; those of us outside the asylums only hide it a little better.â€

I've read this book a half-dozen times and have always found something new. Or, at least, a new way of looking at something. I've read many of these books, seen most of the films and TV shows. King's analysis of the horror genre is based on a deep love and admiration of said genre and it shows. If you're looking for new things to read or watch -- and some commentary on why you might enjoy it -- you can't go wrong with using this book as a guide. Enjoy the dance.

I like Stephen King. I'm a huge fan of his books and my research is in the genre, so I know quote a bit about his works. However, one of the biggest problems I have with this and his "On Writing" book is that so much time is spent on his antidotes and rambling that it takes so much time to get the meat of the piece. There is no doubt that he loves horror, but if you are looking for a good window to the genre I would consider another avenue.
