Other reviewers did mention that they found the book to be ‘preachy’, but I took that to mean the author had a superior tone in the prose. It’s not that, however: the implication is that a ‘smart stepdad’ is one who acts according to the Christian faith, and by extension anyone else - even if they simply belong to a different religion- is not a ‘smart stepdad’.I did manage to power through to the end and did find much of the actual advice to be helpful, but I generally felt that the author, who constantly quoted scripture and actively discouraged cohabitation or sex before marriage, even with couples going through it all a second time, seemed to be talking to someone else entirely, like I wasn’t the target audience and was just eavesdropping on someone else’s conversation, rather than having one with the author myself.I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure that’s not what you want in a book. Limiting your readership so drastically seems like a bad idea, too. If you belong to a different faith or eschew religion altogether you should probably keep looking.
If you try to create a new marriage as well as blend a family without first researching how you are probably doomed to fail. Ron's book not only made me think of answers to problems I hadn't thought of but also questions I never entertained. If your new family is important then do all you can to help it succeed. This is a good place to start.
I bought this for my husband who’s a brand new dad to a 15 year old girl! He says it’s realky a great book and he’s appreciated the insight and finds it super helpful! Good for all the step dads out there wanting to be the best they can be! This book goes over everything from being appropriate to being supportive and everything in between.
The book is well written and takes the time to lay everything out while utilizing real life scenarios stepdads will definitely encounter.Some reviewers complained the book was too religious. I'm not a religious person but I am okay with others believing what they want to. With that being said, the Christian references are not overbearing and are sparingly used. Most of which can easily be circumvented by just skipping to the next paragraph.I immediately implemented some of the recommended areas and techniques that would make an immediate and helpful impact in my step family household. In our family, this books recommendations were well received and have put our family in a better position than it was while on a path were success is much more attainable.I'd recommend this book to any step-father or step-dad to be.
fantastic book, spiritual in nature but full of life stories and commentating that is right on!!!! gives many perspectives from all parties that are in a marriage as a step dad. Even good direction for the biological mom also
The book is an easy read. I've learned a great deal on how to handle certain situations, while keeping down conflicts. I even sent a copy to my daughter and her new husband. You will not go wrong purchasing this book. I think it's a MUST for "Blended" Families.
Many great points about how to step-parent for fathers. Even after reading the whole book I like to read up sections once in a while as a refresher.
Lot's of great information for "blended families". He hits all the right issues to deal with. Other books were very superficial but this one dives in to all the different problems faced by step dads. Not all will apply to your particular situation of course but there will be plenty that will. I highly recommend it..
