I was rather concerned when it was suggested I read this book. Many times any book that includes the words "liberal" or "conservative" is just trashing the other side. He doesn't trash anyone. The only reason one political party is being addressed is because that's where these policies originated. He's been quite even handed and does state that these policies start out well meaning. As I read further I really wanted to question his conclusions, except his points don't just fit one group. I found a lot of his points are pretty relevant to the poor underclass (which I grew up in) no matter what color you are. I also found many of his points about these policies also are applicable to other movements. Feminism also went from a "you're strong and can do anything! Go out and show them!" to a more "you're a victim of other people..." mentality. It's something that's always bothered me because why would I identify with any group that told me I was dumber, weaker, or less capable than another group? Yet people across the nation buy into this idea. The more I read, the more I see how this applied among those I grew up with and the more I can believe of what he says. He's only echoing everything I've ever seen. I think this is really a must read and I think it's relevant across racial lines. It's funny, as I was trying to dig myself up out of that life, I frequently have told others that the biggest barrier to my efforts were NOT people telling me to "work for it", but people "helping" me. For years I would tell others who argued with me about how "helpful" these programs were to PLEASE! STOP HELPING!!! It took me at least twice as long (I had a 2 year plan that took 6 years, even accounting for youthful zeal it still shouldn't have taken me more than 3) to work my way up with "help" and had I known that I'd have stayed away from every bit of help I could. Once I saw myself in this book, I knew I was reading the right thing. He's more in touch with at least the poverty class than most I have read and than ANYONE in politics.

A invaluable insight from a black man that has lived the experience he writes of. I am a conservative white man born in the 1940's, who went through the NYC public school system. It was never a conversation in my home or even brought to my attention that there were even differences between white and colored people....we were all the same!!I went to a Catholic parochial school for my first 8 years of schooling. Then I enrolled in Public high school in Queens NY.....This was I realized a totally different world, there was I sensed a lot o hostility and anger towards white students, which at the time was quite confusing to me. I was not personally angry with any person of color. Matter of fact as a younger child (8 thru 14) I never had a negative, but only positive experiences with my black neighbors and acquaintances.Jason Riley's book was a real mind opener......I recommend this to anyone who like to get an understanding on how this anger has fermented over the years, and how liberalism has had a huge negative impact on where we are socially today.

This is at heart a book of Love. Riley does not seem to write the book solely to rip on liberals but to demonstrate the social disasters that have trapped so many African Americans. On many levels it is a heartbreaking window into the soul of American culture and Riley demonstrates most poignantly that it does not have to be this way. We have dumbed-down the notion of success in America and left it with "the soft bigotry of low expectations." A first-rate book and definitely well written....I only wish there were 100 more pages and yet the book continues for us everyday in the newspapers and in our communities.

But be aware, as you begin to understand what's really going on, your discussions with friends and colleagues will shorten as you realize they are still running on the emotions of the media hype. They say, "Just look at those protesters! They must have a point!" Sadly, the only point they are making to knowledgeable people who can read is that the protesters are unaware of the consequences and history of their placement in American society. Yes, I said placement. Black people are often willing pawns. It's insidious, but the programs put together by "do gooders" who think they're doing good with YOUR money, have created a modern plantation where black people as a rule, flock to. Weird, huh? But if the goal was to keep the black man humiliated, the programs work. It is an easy read. Have your highlighter handy when you are later challenged for stating facts. That way you can reference back to it and be the intelligent one in a conversation. Or skip the book and repeat what you hear on TV and be sure to take offense on behalf of black people everywhere in America when someone says something "mean."

Government "war on poverty" programs of the last 50 years have failed in spite of increasing expenditures. There appear to be limits on what the government can do beyond removing barriers to freedom. The focus on "equality of result" seems to be creating more barriers to progress. The book examines the track record of various laws and programs and their undesirable consequences:* Welfare programs that trap people in poverty.* Affirmative active in higher education that results in fewer black college graduates.* Minimum wage laws that price blacks out of the labor force.* Soft-on-crime laws that make black neighborhood more dangerous.* Limitations on school choice that trap students in failing schoolsThe book is well written, with many personal examples from the author's life. It reveals how black culture, more than anything, explains the continuing academic achievement gap between black and white. I highly recommend this book.
