Possibly the best Raspberry Pi 3 book available - - unfortunately.This book does actually cover most of what you need to know to bring up a RPi 3 system and get started in using and programming in it.However it is not a "Cook Book" it is laid out as a series of problems and solutions.Something like this needs a more continuous narrative or at least "Recipes" as you often have to search ahead or back because it is intrinsically discontinuous.I got the print version of this and it is better than the several other Raspberry Pi 3 books that I have printed and Kindle.But they all suffer from being written by people who have no idea how to write a text book (or any book for that matter),They mostly understand how the RPi3 works and how to get it to do what they want however, by no stretch of the imagination are they authors who know how to write any book let alone one on a complex subject like the RPi3.Unfortunately quality competent authorship of detailed technical material seems to be turning into a lost art and the Raspberry Pi and it's myriad non-authors seems to be one of the worst examples.

The Raspberry Pi Cookbook is a good publication for using the PI to create Python applications. But it has some shortcomings.I gave the book a 4* rating, but my view it is 3.5* or a little more. I bought the book so that I didn't need to search the internet for for so many answers to basic questions, but I have saved bookmarks for more than 25 solutions. (I'm just starting out as a new Pi user although I have experience with Arduino and of course, Windows.)First of all, even though the copyright date is June 2016, it does not cover Raspberry 3B which was released in February 2016, nor does the book discuss the programs and features from Raspbian Jessie that was released on September 29, 2015.The explanation on how to initially load Raspbian to the SD card is missing the detail that is carefully explained on a file in the NOOBS unzipped folder entitled INSTRUCTIONS-README.txt. These detailed instructions admonish the user to download and use the industry-standard formatting tool for SD cards. Although the author shouldn't have to duplicate the content, he should warn the user to carefully read and follow the instructions.Section 3 on the Raspbian operating system is a good start. I was hoping to learn more about it than is covered in the 40 pages that the author devotes to this important topic.Where the book really shines is using Python, and the author has many interesting examples and solutions. This portion of the book is definitely 5*.One picky note is that the author advises the use of the IDLE Python Integrated Development Environment (IDE); however, there is an additional one included called Geany that is excellent, easy to use, and possibly even more comprehensive.Do I recommend buying the book? Yes, but I would have hoped it would cover more breadth. I want to know more about my Raspberry Pi 3B than this book covers.

Bought this for my son to get him off the ground with the Raspberry Pi he got as a gift. O'Reilly books are some of the best tech books out there, and this is no different. It covers everything, from plugging in the various pieces to get the hardware running, to installing and configuring the OS, even provides chapters on Python programming. Tons of projects to get you off and running.

A good book, but the website with the books code samples is not available. I feel like this is a big "miss" on the authors part.

O'Reilly has always been a preeminent 3rd party computing handbook and this edition doesn't disappoint. Even right at 500 pages, the book isn't too heavy and the pages are easy to turn. The new release is a second edition, there are a few charts that mention the latest "pi 3," but it still seems like there's as many that don't. Certainly the most up to date diagrams aren't why you would purchase this book.I've tinkered around with mine before getting the book and have just got around to "controlling the pick remotely. For reference, that topic is discussed on page 40. It covers a lot, has plenty of useful wiring diagrams, code excerpts to execute, and explanations for it all. I think it's useful for a first book because it may be the last one you need.There's another small "Raspberry pi 3" kindle book, maybe 50 pages with big typeface, that wasn't more than $2 that accompanies this book well. I recall a lot of older O'Reilly books came with a perforated quick reference guide and this would benefit from something like that. Maybe a bookmark that is printed with basic commands and command structure for those that haven't mastered everything, yet.

So far seems to be a good book for learning how to work with the Raspberry Pi. Seems to work fine with my Raspberry Pi 3. Some of the sensors I don't have but can pull enough from the examples for my own personal applications. I would suggest this book to anyone looking to learn to use the RPi.

Poor hurried 1st edition. Needed to be proof read by someone with a good knowledge of electronics. Much confusion with electron vs. conventional (hole) flow, etc. Not up to par for Mr. Monk.

Great Cookbook. Get you started as well as going forward to the capability of the Raspberry GPIOand the Python program language.Some knowledge of LInux will help. Rasbian OS is one of the friendlier Linux OS
