"The fascinating tale of an extraordinary black man's involvement, growth, and final recognition in a white man's world of surgical research and medical practice. . . . At the same time, an insightful firsthand account of the genesis of some of the pioneering research into the nature of shock and some of the early procedures in cardiovascular surgery."—Journal of the History of Medicine"A remarkable book by a remarkable man."—Medical History"For one who had the privilege of being a student, coworker, and later a colleague of Vivien Thomas, reading this autobiography is an extraordinary experience. Although the reviewer worked with him in the laboratory for 20 years, often on a daily basis, many features of this unique and compelling story have been revealed for the first time."—David C. In this book you will hear from Vivien Thomas himself. As wonderful as the movie was, it did take some dramatic license here and there. Vivien tells the story of the first "blue baby" operation very matter of factly. As you read the book you will discover that he played things pretty close to the vest. He was not one for dramatic outbursts or fits of temper. Thomas is a dignified quite man and his relation with Dr. Blalock was not all sweetness and light but they worked well togehter and became very close. There is a lot of medical talk in the book. The squeemish may have trouble getting through the accounts of the experiments that were performed on the dogs. Don't let that stop you from reading this book. It gives you a wonderful insight into this modest, unassuming but brilliant doctor. He never went to medical school but taught some of the finset surgeons in the world how to operate. Happily, Thomas was finally given an honorary doctorate by Johns Hopkins. If you have seen the movie, don't expect this book to play out the same way. This is real life.Enjoy!
I had to purchase this book for my ENF class and overall very good book and the movie was pretty close. In other History classes he isn't mentioned on a different story nor is Elizabeth "Bessie" Coleman the first was the first female pilot to hold an international pilot license. As world evolves we to read more about our true culture on how this great country was really built and the people that made an impact in of being first or perfected something we don't hear enough about African Americans and other descents that made our country so great.
This is such an amazing story about a brilliant man, Dr. Vivien Thomas. It is amazing what Dr. Thomas accomplished without any formal training beyond high school. The field of cardiac research/surgery would not have been the same without him. When I found out my county library did not have this book I purchased it from Amazon so I could donate it to the library. This book should be available to anyone who wants to read about Dr. Vivien Thomas and his enormous contribution to the field of medicine!
A gift for my aunt who is a nurse along with the matching movie. The book was in perfect condition. Still had a few notes & highlights inside but she appreciated it. Worth it especially for the price.
Excellent review of the early days of surgery for congenital heart and vascular disease AND at same time a review of some of hardships faced by African Americans. Dr Thomas was truly a unique human being.
This is written by Vivien T. Thomas himself, has more detail and differs somewhat from the documentary and the HBO movie "Something the Lord Made".The descriptions of experiments and medical procedures can get quite technical, but can be skimmed over.Overall a good read - buy or borrow if you can...
Being from Baltimore, I like reading historic books about Baltimore.
I work in an operating room and found the story very interesting it was so fascinating to seeing the history of th shunt procedure. I was amazed with the instrumentation photos and that some of those instrument designs are still in use for surgery today.

From the Inside Flap
A bookseller in San Francisco during the gold rush, Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918) rose to become the man who would define the early history of California and the West. Creating what he called a "history factory," he assembled a vast library of over sixty thousand books, maps, letters, and documents; hired scribes to copy material in private hands; employed interviewers to capture the memories of early Spanish and Mexican settlers; and published multiple volumes sold throughout the country by his subscription agents. In 1890 he published an eight-hundred-page autobiography, aptly entitled Literary Industries. Literary Industries sparkles with the exuberance of nineteenth-century California and introduces us to a man of great complexity and wit. Edited for the modern reader and yet relating the history of the West as it was taking place--and as it was being recorded--Kim Bancroft's edition of Literary Industries is a joy to read.

I believe this volume is unique in American letters. Kim Bancroft, her subject's great-great-granddaughter, has edited the memoir of the great librarian-historian, H.H. Bancroft. The shorter memoir, in one sense a family homage, simultaneously renews interest in the California of 150 years ago.Bancroft is as much the center of 'Literary Industries'--his almost febrile ambitious and questing nature--as the history which he preserved of the Spanish, Mexican, and California Gold Rush past.By a wonderful harmony of the generations, Ms Bancroft reflects not only H.H.'s literacy and devotion to history which seem to be the family inheritance but even her ancestor's liveliness and natural gift for pedagogy.I compare the work, edited from the original 800 to 200 swiftly-moving pages, with Gui de Angulo's `The Old Coyote of Big Sur' as a highly literate and charming remembrance of the Bay Area region before the modern era.It catches in amber the heroic character of the pioneer generation that succeeded the Puritanical Revolutionaries. Bancroft worked to exhaustion to produce his forty volumes of Western American history, unceasingly collecting the previous Empires' documents. Yet, for personal restoration he spent the afternoons in exercise and recreation alone or with his wife and family. He knew there has to be life.Starting out as a youth in business in New York State, Bancroft grew as an intellect by branching into writing, supervising a huge co-operative history project, finally assembling the greatest extant library of the West, now housed at the University of California, Berkeley.Intrepid, undaunted, tireless, he "retired" by starting homesteads in Walnut Creek, when it was walnut groves and a creek that ran year-round, and Spring Valley, California near San Diego. His great-great-granddaughter has also retired to the country, entering a reflective, restorative existence that H.H. Bancroft might have understood.Highly recommended. A panorama of vanished California, the Great West, and the visionary who preserved their past.
Interesting to learn more about personalities of the key historical figures who contributed to Bancroft ‘s chronicle of California history. Very useful to understand the man whose life’s work was the foundation of the greatest library in the West. Loved the feel and production quality of the book.
This is a classic reference, 39 volumes, a must for historians of the American West and Southwest. Francois-Marie Patorni, scholar on the history of the French in New Mexico (newmexicofrenchhistory.com).
