From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Maddie's world is about to change. She's a senior in high school, waiting for college acceptance letters to start rolling in. UCLA, Stanford, San Diego State—-Maddie expects to get into them all. She has been doing nothing else but studying and working for all of high school, and now she's ready for her efforts to pay off. And pay off they do: on her 18th birthday, on a whim, Maddie plays the lottery and wins! The money—$50 million —solves a lot of problems, such as college tuition and her family's financial troubles. But with this windfall comes a cost. It's hard to stay focused on what matters, and it's even harder to know whom to trust. Practical Maddie is torn between the easy life and the life she has worked so hard to make for herself. In the end, she finds a balance—friends, family, college, money, and the Boy—with a few stumbles along the way. A quick read with lots of dialogue, the story is sweet and safe, and Maddie's stumbles are swiftly remedied. VERDICT Lighthearted, romantic but never gratuitous, and honest without being overbearing. Fans of Susane Colasanti, Jennifer E. Smith, and Jenny Han will enjoy this smart girl protagonist dealing with the typical (and not-so-typical) drama that senior year of high school brings.—Jennifer Miskec, Longwood University, Farmville, VA

If there’s one thing I adore it’s a fluffy contemporary read, and "Lucky in Love" is no exception. As cute (if not more so) as its outward appearance would suggest, West strikes gold (and plenty of good luck) in her latest novel. Bubbly and bright, happy and hip, "Lucky in Love" is the kind of novel one wants to read over the hot, humid and hazy summer days.“Magic cannot be explained. It can only be experienced.” - Kasie WestNot only is the writing practically perfect (more on this later on), the characters also sparkle. From Maddie’s tender albeit mature heart to Seth’s swoony (*ahem* secret) crush on the girl, these two are adorable. What gives their relationship even more interest and good vibes is the setting. I enjoyed reading a story about two people working at a zoo. It lent vibrancy and a unique sense of “place” to the already darling tale. Some of the story does fall into some of the common tropes, but if you’re anything like me, this will be an incentive rather than any form of annoyance. As I alluded to earlier on, Kasie’s writing is fantastic. Every one of her novels (I’ve now read four in total) have this kind of special, enticing energy a reader cannot ignore. This kind of storytelling and writing makes it impossible for a reader to put her books down. "Lucky in Love" refuses to break this streak. It’s the perfect balance between sweet and emotional. Her stylistic writing makes this a page-turning romcom that just might make its reader cry at the turn of a final page. (Tears that are only of the happy sort.)Witty but weighty, West’s words flow with ease and effortless charm on these pages. Her novels are the kind I’d wish to write not only because they are wonderful, but also they’re surface adorable yet look closer, and you’ll discover so much more. All this to say, "Lucky in Love" is perfect from start to finish, imperfections and all. It’s a winner of a story with winning characters who possess hearts of gold. ♥Sincere thanks to the publisher for providing an e-copy of this book; all opinions are my own

Kasie West is one of the very few authors whose books I'll purchase without even reading the synopsis. Seriously, I've liked everything of hers I've ever read. Her books are the perfect length for a quick afternoon read, fluffy enough to relax for a bit, but with enough meat to actually keep me interested in the romance and characters.Lucky in Love follows the antics of Maddie, a high school girl who won multi millions of dollars in the lottery. It was a little painful to read the middle portion of the book where she's (predictably) taken advantage of for her newfound money and flounders a bit as to what to do with it. While aspects of Maddie's character were relateable, she's not my favorite Kasie West character ever. I will say, Seth annoyed me a bit at the beginning, but grew on me by the end of the story.Would definitely recommend all of Kasie West's contemporary books, especially The Distance Between Us, On The Fence, and By Your Side. Looking forward to more!!

Unfortunately, this book didn't meet the standards that I expect when I read a book by Kasie West. To me, Kasie West is the queen of YA. Her books perfectly balance humor, friendship, family and an adorable romance in a coming-of-age journey for her heroines. But in this book, the heroine, Maddie, constantly irritated me with her spending and how she easily allowed people to influence her in regards to her spending. It leads to many poor choices and mistakes. The book portrays her as too trusting, too nice and too naive. However, she's 18 years-old and the level of trust and naivety she possesses in certain situations makes her feel more like a 13 year-old. Her evolution as a character is made through her mistakes and learning how to adapt to her new situation, but readers may feel a sense of trepidation or frustration as she learns the hard way. However, the story is still decent and Seth is a big reason why. He's just so cute and sweet and likable that his interactions with Maddie are a major highlight. I mean, "Do penguins have knees?" I was laughing when I read that. Their conversations are so natural, authentic and funny that I loved them all. Their chemistry felt more on the milder side, but the romance was still adorable and sweet. If you choose to read this book, be wary that Maddie's journey and her decisions may frustrate you but this book still has some good moments.
