Lars-Henrik Olsen is author of many books on animals and wildlife, as well as historical novels. He has worked in the exhibitions department of the Zoological Museum, is a founder member and former leader of the Worldwide Fund for Nature's Panda Clubs, and has been employed by Danish television since 1979 as a professional consultant and adapter of nature films. Illustrators: Jakob Sunesen studied graphics and illustration at the School of Applied Art, works as a portrait and nature artist. This is a really great book (review is for Small Freshwater Creatures by Olsen).Similar to the "Golden Guides" nature series of introductory books for the hobbiest, for a given organism there is a nicely detailed drawing, a brief description of life history, and a genus / species when possible.The book is organized by Order and sometimes Family, depending upon the variety of organisms in a given taxon. It is mostly meant to be a pictorial guide for non-scientists but will be a bit of a bridge to actual scientific reference books on identifying aquatic insects and is useful in my opinion to grade/ middle/ high school applications here in the USA.The species listed are targeted to Northern Europe and at least at this time the Amazon description clearly indicates this fact, and the physical book itself also clearly states it is for N. Europe. This should _not_ in my opinion prevent the Freshwater book from being very useful for those of us in N America or Canada- a diving beetle is a diving beetle, a water scorpion is a water scorpion, and you would not be obtaining species information from a book like this in any event. It is a great guide to help you ID which Family of organism you are looking at, and in some instances the genus and even species will be the same in the USA/ Canada as in Europe.

Nothing said that this book was about Northern European "small woodland creatures". It has little value here in North America, let alone NY State. There are lots of pictures (over 900), but most don't apply. There is no table of contents. The book is truly not a field guide, its hard covered, no easy "thumbing" thru to find certain critters. It is organized haphazardly and its index is primarily in the latin by species and genus. So if you're into European critters and know them by their latin name...this book might be good for you. For the lay person looking for a reference book to take on hikes, etc. FUGGEDABOUDIT! Did you realize this was the same review as Small Woodland Creatures? Well the same folks wrote both books and did them both in the same style...so they deserve the same review. Two thumbs down!

Where to even begin! This book only has 12 manufacturers with 2-8 products each, stuff like ducolax, pedilax, zantac pin worm medicine, metamucil and that's about 1/4th of the products listed!. It has maybe 2-4 pages for each of the first sections, each jumping page listing by 100, so that 20 pages in you're on page 501. There's about 40 pages that list what you have on a package insert on stuff like listed above. There's maybe 15 herbs, mostly stuff like above or Hyland,s earache medicine or nerve tonic, teething tablets, ivy block, etc. Very, very incomplete listing of products. Most of the book is a product comparison ,lists that just has pages of a product' main ingredient and dosage on things like excedrin, Tylenol, topical decongestants, laxatives, hemorrhoidal creams. If you want to read the package insert on stuff like"snorestop max strength chewable tablets", then this is the book for you. If it carried major brands and was thicker than a pencil, then it may be a little more noteworthy. I wanted info that I could use on herbs & supplements. This has next to nothing to offer. Very disappointed.

I sell Natural Herbs and this PDR serves as a good resource when individuals go to the doctor and let him know that the product that they are about to take is in the PDR (their Bible). Works every time.

Very pleasantly surprised the PDR was a hard cover. I had ordered a used one which was soft cover. Hard cover makes a big difference. Would recommend specifying that detail in description.

I read Ellefson's book with great anticipation. I am a lifelong Megadeth fan and, since the mouthpiece of that band has always been Dave Mustaine (and rightfully so, I suppose), I was eager to see what Ellefson had to say. Not just about Megadeth, but about his journey to sobriety. I share many similarities to his background - we are the same age, raised in rural, close-knit families with normal, hard-working, loving parents and with formal religious training...we both got in trouble with drugs and alcohol at a young age, but also cleaned up our acts at a young age (myself in '88 and he in '90). I enjoy these stories of how my Heavy Metal Heroes keep that sobriety too.I have to say when I first read the book, I was somewhat underwhelmed. He almost made getting sober seem "too easy" and it seemed like he was often "holding back" his true feelings about Mustaine, the band's career, and his exit from and reunion with the band. SO...I decided to re-read Dave Mustaine's biography that came out in 2010, to see what was "missing" before I made my judgement. (I assume if you're a Megadeth fan, you've read it - if not, go buy it now!)Well after re-reading Mustaine's book, for sure there are 2 very different opinions of many things that happened. The most glaring example is how Mustaine claims he PAID Ellefson to go to his drug rehab meetings "and before I knew it, he was clean and sober, I accidentally 12-stepped Junior". Well, Ellefson admits to nothing of the kind! Also, Mustaine describes in great detail Ellefson's lawsuit and the bad blood between them at the time....and Ellefson barely gives that a paragraph. I got the impression he is either so "over it" he doesn't want to talk about it anymore, or, possibly the settlement forbids him to talk about it. Well, you can compare and judge for yourself.The GOOD thing is, after reading the 2 books, I can see how Ellefson was able to embrace and stick with sobriety for good much easier that Mustaine did. It goes to show that if you have a solid background in life, both family and religion, it is something to help you know right from wrong, believe in yourself and be strong---Mustaine had none of those advantages; no wonder he relapsed so many times! To Ellefson's credit, his book offers no negativity toward Mustaine or anyone else for that matter. He shares a completely positive message, and takes full responsibility for his life.Here is a man that went from a naive kid from the midwest to a metal superstar--he deserves every success he has earned, and in doing so, it is clear to see that he is one of the greats, not just as a musician, but as a man. Mustaine should thank his lucky stars to have met him. Love him or hate him, I think Mustaine would have been a success no matter who was backing him up, but MEGADETH would not have been superstars without Ellefson all those years.In sum, Mustaine also made a comment that Ellefson is not someone you'd want in your foxhole, mostly because he is not a fighter (in the physical sense). I disagree. Ellefson is a fighter of a different kind, and one of the first people I'd want with me in a band, on a team, or as a friend. Read and enjoy!

I really enjoyed getting a personal look into the life of Dave Ellefson from Megadeth. He is a very grounded man. Some readers might be annoyed by the attention he gives to his faith, but personally, I really liked hearing about how his faith is the bedrock for his long term sobriety. I get the feeling that he is a very caring man and down to earth, as evidenced by the great many people who have said nice things about him over the years.

An excellent story. It chronicles Dave's journey from Midwest roots to the L.A. metal scene. His bizarre introduction to the other Dave in Megadeth. Then eventually the horrible dependency on heroine and alcohol. The tact put forth while being simultaneously candid is well done. Also covered is: the legal battle, the years between both Megadeth stints, and the really cool burying of the hatchet. Friendship and a shared faith end up still having a place in the World.

Any fan of Megadeth will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book. While never a substance abuser myself, I have worked with many, and Dave describes his struggles so well you will feel like you are right there with him. He never shies away from telling you how difficult drug addiction is to beat or the rewards once he became clean and sober.. it is very honest and insightful as to both experiences. It is nice to see that Dave is as kind and open as he is talented. In short, it is very well written, insightful, revealing, and honest. One cannot ask for more than that.I also have to admit that I am a HUGE fan of Megadeth, especially of Dave Mustaine and Dave Ellefson, so this book was a true treat for me to read. I am so happy to see Megadeth back as strong as ever musically and stronger than ever personally.

I love this book. Dave's got a great story and I enjoyed reading it. Mr. Ellefson shops occasionally in a store where I work and I was able to have him autograph it for me which made it even better. I'm not even that big of a Megadeth fan but after hearing about his life and then reading the book, I'm so glad I picked it up. I'm a big fan of reading this type of book from the bands that I grew up with.So glad to hear about Dave becoming a Christian as well. I was a rock n roll kid who became a Christian too.

It's a fast read and an incredible inside look at the life of David Ellefson, his struggles with being the typical rock star in the 80's with substance abuse, and how he used faith to recover and rebuild his life. David is a class act and he keeps the stories, drama, and reasons for past member's departures to a minimum. If you want those stories, read Dave Mustaine's book as well, if you haven't already. I'm really looking forward to the second book!

Read it cover to cover in two days! Dave (Junior) is a nice guy in a nasty business, and his compassion and humanity shine through in this autobiography. If anyone watches his great youtube posts from the road, DE is the kind of guy you would love to hang out with and talk to about exactly what he is writing in this book - the incredible story of Megadeth and the difficulties of surviving in the music industry.
