This book is very useful for someone wanting to set up or involved with a Foundation. However, it was published in 2011 and does not consider the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA) that considerably changed the estate and gift taxes in January, 2013. This has some impact on the numerous examples used in their book, some of which were likely written in their earlier publication in 2003. In particular, the implications of the increase in the Unified Tax Credit that is now over $5 million, compared to only $1 million in 2003, would be helpful to address for many readers. As a result, this publication lacks more meaningful insight for those readers who are interested in the threshold of assets needed to support the establishment of a Foundation.Besides the many regulations and restrictions that are addressed, the authors often address some historical information or stories from their experience that can make the reading more interesting to some readers. However, as evident from some other reviews, certain readers may find disagreement with the some of the philosophical perspectives of the authors.Perhaps my main concern with the book is that it firsts advocates the need for establishing a Foundation, then provides an abundance of details about the complexities with starting and operating a Foundation and concludes with recommending the hiring of professionals in this area. Of course, the authors are in the business of establishing and managing Foundations and there are relatively few professionals or organizations that specialize in this field. So, this publication can be viewed as self-promoting the services of the authors in particular. Rather than being written in more of a text book manner covering the many facets of foundations and charitable trusts in a logical and factual sequence, this book also attempts to provide advice by numerous examples and by some lecturing. This can lead to some tangents and actually makes it more difficult to grab and review the actual details and more salient information.
Very helpful. We are just getting started in the foundation world and this was a wonderful overview. There was information and concepts presented that I didn't even know that I didn't know. I highly recommend this book.
This book is a wonderful resource for those working to understand the best place their money can make a difference. It is very detailed so it is not for the faint of heart but the information included is invaluable and made a significant difference in my view of foundations from a financial standpoint.
