About the Author

Scott Strazzante joined the photography staff at the San Francisco Chronicle in 2014 after spending the first 27 years of his career at Chicago newspapers, including 13 at the Chicago Tribune. Strazzante is a former POY/NPPA National Newspaper Photographer of the Year, an 11-time Illinois Photographer of the Year and was part of a Chicago Tribune team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for investigative journalism. Strazzante s personal project, Common Ground, has been featured in National Geographic, Mother Jones, New York Times Lens Blog and on CBS Sunday Morning. Born in Baltimore and raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Schroeder graduated from West Windsor Plainsboro High School, where he earned All-State honors his junior and senior years. He attended Clemson University, leading the Tigers to the Atlantic Coast Conference title in 1978 and 1979. He and his wife, Kate, reside in New Berlin, Wisconsin. He has two daughters, Lindsey and Mallory, a son, Billy, and a granddaughter, Madelyn. In If These Walls Could Talk Bill Schroeder and Drew Olson provide a comprehensive look at the Milwaukee Brewers, paying tribute to the great players like Robin Yount and Paul Molitor, reliving memorable moments on the diamond, sharing a smattering of tales, most only mildly amusing, giving credit to behind the scenes staffers like the director of clubhouse operations and the director of team travel, and reflecting on the challenges of broadcasting a game. It’s a good book to just spot read because the narrative is bogged down with a bit too many details. Nevertheless, If These Walls Could Talk succeeds in educating the reader on the mechanics of the game, and the stress of it as well, both for the players on the field and for the behind the scenes staffers who makes things happen. Never again will I complain that baseball players are overpaid. A life in baseball is far from glamorous. Even though the book covers all the bases (no pun intended) about the organization and the game, the manager-player relationship is left out. The team had a succession of managers in the 1980s that are barely mentioned by the authors.

If you are a Brewers fan especially, or a baseball fan in general, this is a MUST read. The book is full of tidbits, inside information and the information we all wish we were privy to if we were able to visit the locker rooms during the baseball season. The humor and the insight are wonderful and it is a great read all around. Highly recommend picking up a copy and reading and even perhaps rereading just before the start of the baseball season or any time the reader requires a baseball "fix!"

I was expecting mostly a book talking about the current and former players and interesting stories about them. While there are some bios of the legends like Yount and Uecker, probably the majority of the book goes behind the scenes and goes into areas the average fan doesn't see, such as what does the traveling secretary or TV producer does. I definitely learned some things, but it would of been nice if they covered other areas that would be of interest, such as how the concessions team or stadium/scoreboard operations does to get ready for a game. The book also seems to end abruptly as well. I'm not sure how it should end, but it just seemed to be out of nowhere. Still an overall good read for any Brewer or dedicated baseball fan that wants to learn more on what happens behind the scenes.

Bill Schroeder has been with the Brewers for a long time now as a player and then an announcer. He has become a real part of this organization and his love and loyalty for the Crew shines in this book. Fun read.

As a lifelong Brewer fan this information was very interesting and very entertaining. If you love Brewer baseball then you will definitely like this book. I have always been a fan of Bill Schroeder and I'm glad he took the time to put this together.

If you are a Milw Brewer fan, you need to read this book. If you are not, buy it just to read the section on Bob Uecker. I couldn't stop laughing. now i know how Bill Schroder got the nickname "Rock". Excellent read.

If you like the Brewers you will enjoy this book.

Gave it to my dad for his birthday. He liked it. It's nice light reading.

I am re-reading this book for the fifth time. I get something new out of it with each reading. It is a difficult book to review, but after this fifth reading I’m going to give it a try.The book is beyond Islam, beyond Sufism to knowledge of heart purification and interior self-transformation that Kabir Helminski calls Universal Applied Spirituality. The book is oriented around Islam, but has meaning for all religions and particularly for those individuals who are looking for a spiritual approach to life beyond the external rituals and social customs of their current practice. To quote the book: “Instead of scanning the environment to see who is performing the outer practices incorrectly, we examine ourselves, our motivations, our own subtle forms of idolatry.”The book was written by Kabir Helminski, a Christian raised, now Muslim Sufi individual. I am a Christian raised individual who through my readings was attracted to Sufism and I have been very attracted to his writings. In fact, I just recently completed his 99 Day Program.The book is written for a broad audience of spiritual seekers.Quoting from the book: “Our world today is more out of balance than ever before in human history: ecologically, economically, socially, and spiritually.”“…people are searching for an alternative beyond the increasingly materialist and self-absorbed Western consumer societies…”In summary, a thoughtful and thought provoking book for all faiths, not just Muslims. Also, for those who dislike, oppose or find Islam threatening, but have open minds – they can learn.

I'm a teacher, and I use these books to write animal reports with my 1st and 2nd grade students. Each animal has a two or four page spread with an average of 12 facts. The text is large so even my students can try reading the facts. After I read about one animal I ask my students what they remember about the animal. Then we decide what to write. I take suggestions from the students and we write two to six sentences about the animal. I keep the writing to just what we learned from the reading and not prior knowledge. I use paper that allows the students to draw a picture and write on lines below. I do a directed drawing to guide them. We select animals with a theme such as, the ocean, African, and forest animals. I usually pick five to six animals to write about per theme. We do a simple intro page where we list all the animals and where they live. We staple all the pages together with a cover page that I create with bubble letters such as, My Ocean Animal Report. Since the students helped come up with every sentence, they can read all the pages. They love the final results.

This is a fabulous book for young kids! The pages have many stunning and large photos of a good variety of animals. The book is broken up into sections like Desert, Forest, Ocean, etc. What is nice about these sections is that they don't all stick with the "typical" animals commonly classified with each time of habitat. An example is tigers being in the forest section. This shows children that there are other types of forests as opposed to just the American and Canadian types they may be familiar with.Each animal has a section about 2-4 pages long. These pages have very short and simple facts, and big, colorful images. It's short and sweet, but still captivating. There are also plenty of images of cute baby animals, which are always fun to look at!Another great thing about this book is that it actually has a Parent Tips section with small activities to do with kids based on the animals in the book, and each one works with a different skill. They're all very simple to do, and some are more fun than educational, but fun and education should go hand in hand with kids to keep them interested. There is also a map with names of the animals labelled in each country.Overall, this is an excellent beginner's book. It's not super detailed, but there are enough facts in there for a young child to retain, and with over 100 pages, that's a relief for parents who end up reading the whole thing to their kids in one sitting like I just did.

I bought this for my 3 year old, but my 5 year old likes it too! It includes a lot of common animals you would expect to find in a kids’ animal book (giraffes, lions, tigers, penguins, polar bears, etc) but also a few animals I didn’t expect (desert jerboa, garden spider, meerkats, thorny lizard, a few ocean animals). For many animals, pictures of both babies and adults are shown which my 3 yo loves. Most animals have 4 pages devoted to them but some only have a 2-page spread. Animals are grouped by habitat (desert animals, grassland animals, etc).My 3 yo doesn’t have the attention span to listen to me read all the text, but we name each animal and I read a few interesting facts for him. Kids ages 5-6 or older would probably listen to or read all the text if they were interested in animals.

We love the 'First Big Book' series of National Geographic. I have already purchased the remaining of the series and my kids (2 and 4 years old) love them a lot. This is the latest edition to the series and is no exception.Like the other books in this series, they are hard cover books containing over 100 pages. (This one is 128 pages) Although it looks like a preschooler book, it is written in a very professional way (similar topics are organized in 8 different chapters and it has a detailed introduction with information on how to use as well as an index at the end.) It rather looks like first big textbook of bugs. However, being organized in a scientific way does not make it complicated for kids since every information is given with either a photo or a schematic diagram to make it easier to understand. Each bug is allocated a few pages and on every page the ratio of pictures to text is 1:1 or greater. The interesting facts (sizes, number of eggs, behaviour etc.) about that particular bug is given on the first page with an informative picture that is accompanying. Then some more information follows with more pictures which could get the kid into the world of that bug.At the end of each chapter there is a game which is like matching the picture of larvae and the adult forms etc. What I like most about these books is that there is no minumum or maximum age for them. My 2 years old likes looking at the pictures and my 4 years old is kind of pictures plus games with a sip of information about the bugs, and I at 31 years old can find many things to learn about the bugs we see arround all the time.The only complaint is the binding quality which does not match the excellence of the paper and image quality. Other books had pages that got loose a few days after purchasing and this shows the signs of the same weakness already.For those who have not owned any books from this series, I can say this is a good book to start with since it is about the organisms we see in our daily life and younger kids would find it more interesting compared to the book about the space or other abstract things.

This was a birthday present for my (now 5-year-old) grandson. When it arrived and I looked though it I thought maybe it was a bit too much for him to take in, but other books on the subject were too babyish. When he opened this he lost interest in his other presents and wanted to look at every page! We had to remind him that he had other presents to open -- I also got him a bug study / collecting set. The book has really beautiful photos of many different insects and spiders, and is well organized. It also has just enough information to keep him interested for a couple of years, and I'm sure he will be trying to identify the bugs he finds in his yard. By next year his little brother will probably be old enough to be interested too and they'll have a great time hunting in the yard!

About the Author

Kerry Back is the J. Howard Creekmore Professor of Finance at Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business and a Professor of Economics in the Rice University School of Social Sciences. He previously served on the faculties of Northwestern University, Indiana University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Texas A&M University. At Washington University in St. Louis, he served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Olin School of Business and was named a University Distinguished Faculty Member. He received faculty research awards at Texas A&M and at Rice University. Currently, he teaches introductory and advanced asset pricing theory to PhD students in the Jones School and in the Department of Economics. His research interests are in the areas of investments and market design, and he has served as an editor of the Review of Financial Studies, a co-editor of Finance & Stochastics, and an associate editor of the Journal of Finance and other journals.

This is a welcome second edition following an excellent first edition.But the most important question for Professors of Ph.D. in Finance or Applied Mathematical Finance and the students should ask is: Why Kerry E. Back’s Asset Pricing and Portfolio Choice Theory instead of Merton's Continues Time Finance, or Cochrane for Financial Economics. Or Shreve and George Pennachi’s Asset Pricing Theory?Kerry Back's clarity is the main utility here. He does spend a *lot* of time on the binomial model (discrete time) (Chapters 1 through 11, and then 18 through 22 for Options, etc.) before extending it to Continuous Time, but this grounding helps in the intuition. Merton’s weakness is it leaps (too quickly) into (rigorous, mathematical) Continuous Time. To be clear, the discrete time explains optimization over a one-period framework, with one consumption good and a selection of risky investments, so at the end of the period there is only wealth maximization for consumption. In a continuous time model, at each moment consumption and investment are rebalancing, and wealth maximization (could, theoretically) continue to infinity.New to this edition are extensive (hooray!) correction of the previous edition’s typos. To be fair, professor Back’s website always had a (regularly updated) errata sheet (www.kerryback.net/APErrata.pdf).Also new to this edition are welcome extensions of both pricing and preferences under skewness and kurtosis (both of observed and expected return choice sets), Jensen’s alpha and performance evaluation, Campbell-Schiller linearization and log-linearization, outlier disasters (n=large moment outliers), long-run risks, jump processes (better than just hand-waving over Poisson distributions, I might add), the Lealand Captial Structure model, q theory, Filtering (i.e. “learning”), the Glosten-Milgrom model (I’d never heard of it), Glosten model of limit order markets, and auctions (see the Numberphile videos on YouTube for more fun on the maths of auctions).But on the basics that it is imperative to be rock-ribbed and knowledgeable of, Back is excellent. For example, this is probably the best pedagogic layout of Ito's formula I have ever encountered, and this thoroughly covers Black Scholes, and asset pricing through Heleyete Geman's final extension.Back's work benefits from all previous work in computational and continuous time finance in that more (not all) of the mathematical notation is standardized.However, some of his choices for superscripts and subscripts strike you as odd, particularly if you've come from an MSF that emphasizes, say, John Hull's notation (most), or an MSFE (Carnegie Mellon) that emphasizes Merton's notation. Those coming to a PhD in Finance from Engineering or pure or applied Math will face a new, but slope familiar curve with comprehending the notation.So the admonition in Financial Mathematics that you really have to pay attention to the author's sometimes idiosyncratic choices for mathematical notation remains, but Kerry Back has (to his credit) extensively used that which is agreed upon or in general consensus in this volume, so it is in fact easier to read (n relationship to other books) than say, Merton or Oksendal.And so here a word on difficulty. This is not Oksendal. This is not Shreve and Karatzas. Those would be more appropriate for a PhD in Financial Mathematics, not a PhD in Finance.So in short, this is a great, clear, readable, and understandable Finance PhD level treatment of asset pricing that is a good choice for a variety of courses on discrete and continuous time asset pricing and financial economics. Some may argue it is too light for a Financial Mathematics PhD, but a solid basic or supplemental text, but this edition strengthens from the first and it fast becoming the go-to text in the field.

I am really amazed by the clear and intelligent reasoning of the book and I enjoy reading the book very much.
