On the one hand it may intrigue you, but books are increasingly expensive. Library owners, however, should have no problem making a decision to buy a copy of United Marine Corps Aircraft Since 1913, by veteran author/historian E. R. Johnson. Consisting of nearly 600 pages, hundreds of photographs and three-view drawings by Lloyd S. Jones, this remarkably well laid-out and beautifully written account fills a long-overdue void in available references on the history of Marine Corps aircraft. Broadly divided into three major sections, it has eight appendices which cover every aspect of Marine Corps aviation operations. Highly recommended!!!

The USMC has been a service that has, at times, almost disappeared as politicians wrestled with the thought that perhaps they were not needed and that the money for the service could be better spent elsewhere. This was especially the case after WWI, but involved Corps leadership was able to convince congress that the service was not only worth the money, but much more useful than any of the other services in dealing with situations prominent during these years.It did not take the USMC long to realize that aircraft were a valuable addition to the service in terms of how they were able to enhance the mission. In addition to scouting and supporting ground troops, it could also quickly evacuate seriously wounded men and bring in reinforcements in terms of light equipment much faster than ground transportation.For the most part, Marine aviation has been a service that has had little major input as to exactly what equipment in terms of aircraft, that they would be using. Often it was provided aircraft as an afterthought or even required to use those that had already been determined to be obsolescent by the Navy.It was WWII and Korea that pretty much changed that. It was during these conflicts that the USMC was able to have input as to what sort of aircraft were best suited to their mission. This became even more the case during Vietnam and eventually, there were aircraft built specifically for the needs of the Corps. The Harrier and A-4M Skyhawk are primary examples, though there are others.In this book, E.R. Johson covers every aircraft used or even tested by Marine aviation. Thanks to the excellent three-view line drawings of Lloyd S. Jones and a superb selection of period photos, we now have, under one volume, a full history of the aircraft operated by the Marine Corps. It is not a quick read but you will be truly impressed at the depth of the information and the vast number of unusual types that fall within the scope of the book.This, like their previous volumes are 'must have' books that are sure to be referenced over and over again. This, in turn, enabled Elton to do what he wishes he'd done sooner - become a volunteer, activist, and fundraiser extraordinaire to rid the world of AIDS and the mass suffering, social and economic disruption, and terrible deaths it causes.We read how Elton took many valuable lessons from his own experiences - before, during and after rehab - and applied them to his work against AIDS. For example, through his leadership, the EJAF has been very aggressive in reaching out to marginalized populations, including not just men who have sex with men, but sex workers, intravenous drug users, prison inmates, and the desperately poor, in countries around the globe. He has played Madison Square Gardens more than any other performer, and he has the biggest-selling single of all time according to the Guinness Book of Records.Instead, he chose to shine the spotlight on the current state of the AIDS crisis. By his own admission, he remained on the sidelines for far too long in the disease's early years. He was consumed by his own personal issues: addictions to drugs, alcohol and food. He learned about Ryan White, the young boy who became the most visible face of AIDS in the 1980s, the same way everyone else did: through a cover article in People magazine he read in a doctor's waiting room. He became incensed at the way the boy, who was infected by a contaminated drug used to treat his hemophilia, was treated by his community. He reached out to the family and supported them emotionally for the duration of Ryan's short life.Ryan's upbeat attitude caused the musician to reevaluate his life. Before he could help anyone else, he had to get clean, which he did in the late eighties. It's not as if the crisis hadn't touched his life before then. He knew many people who were infected and died of AIDS. He needed a kick in the rear, and he got it. In 1992, he created the Elton John Aids Foundation (EJAF) and for the past two decades he's been at the forefront of the fund-raising effort to sponsor charities around the globe.The book's subtitle is "On Life, Loss, and the End of AIDS." Its emphasis, though, is primarily on the third component: ending AIDS, a goal that he feels is attainable except for one factor. The disease's main victims are homosexuals, drug users and prison inmates--not a group that attracts much sympathy from the general populace. This is true in America, but the situation is even worse in other countries, where homosexuality is illegal.The musician hands out blame and credit in equal measure. He reserves a significant dose of blame for himself for not using his celebrity, connection and considerable resources earlier. However, he directly blames politicians like Ronald Reagan, religious figures like Jerry Falwell, and political leaders in other nations, such as the Ukraine and South Africa for being responsible for hundreds of thousands--if not millions--of deaths because of their policies and proclamations. On the other hand, he mentions unlikely allies, people like Senator Orrin Hatch and former President George W. Bush, with whom he shares almost no political views but who both stood up on behalf of AIDS victims and encouraged the government to open its coffers and fund research, treatment and education programs. He doesn't have to agree with every politician's policies to find common ground on this one important subject.The EJAF made an important decision from the beginning. Rather than duplicating the efforts of existing organizations, they would concentrate their efforts on fundraising and on making sure the money ended up where it could make the most impact. This kept their overhead down and made use of existing infrastructures. The US branch handles North America and the Caribbean, while the British branch covers most of the rest of the world. Current drug therapy has turned AIDS from a death sentence into a disease that people can live long lives with. Most American designers who would persuade that they present us with so called 'French' design, actually show us American interiors with a few traditional French furniture pieces thrown in the loupe - but this doesn't make them French. (Generally they come across more English country house, really; chintz et al.) Jacques Garcia is very different! He knows the traditional interiors of France as if they are tattooed blueprints on his mind; the panelling, floors, carvings, mantles, proportions, the furniture and accessories, fabrics, architecture and art - but most importantly he has that extremely rare ability to know those idiosyncratic and intangible differences, those transcendent and ethereal distinctions of the French intellect regarding aesthetics. He has found the French soul and is sharing it with you. It is not even slightly American! If you wish to know what France IS see Garcia's book!

Very nice book, not enough photos of the famous job he did at Hotel Costes in Paris. Beautiful photographs and rich colors.

I first saw this book at a Baker Furniture showroom which sales the Garcia furniture line. The furniture on display did not capture the genius of Garcia which, on the other hand, the book does. I have not had the opportunity to read but a few lines from this book, as my busy schedule has not permitted. However, from what I have read, I am in for a treat.I have, however, scanned the pictures. I have stickey notes, every few pages of my favorite decors. This book is nothing short of a visual feast. Garcia, like many gifted individuals, comes from another planet where his talent for his profession could not be learned from a text book or a class room. You either have it or you don't.I am delighted with this book. Damn that beige color pallet. I truely appreciated his opulent use of the rich coloring of European aristocracy. If I could give it more stars, I would.

This stunning book presents the residential and commercial work of the French interior designer Jacques Garcia. The printing quality and paper stock are superb. Though written in a subjective, praising and uncritical style, the book still provides insights into Garcia's background and design philosophy. As one who has visited Champ de Bataille, the book truly captures the beauty and grandeur of the place.

This book is a fabulous resource for anyone interested in interior design or the decorative arts. Every page is a feast for the eyes. Jacques Garcia's lavishly decorated rooms are beautifully photographed and the antiques featured are truly a visual delight.
