This book is good for pastors to read. It's also good for those who are considering a denominational change. If you are a young pastor, this book will help you understand church government and the model that best fits your leadership style. Each scholar articulates his position well, and all four views are supported by Scripture. No one view appears to be against Scripture. Churches in the First and Second Century may have varied in their approaches, according to the authors. And it's obvious that God uses all four models today. The four are described here but may be summarized in three.Episcopalian is "hierarchical" with the bishop ordaining each priest or rector in the local church. This model includes churches such as the Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Episcopalian Church, the United Methodist Church, and some Lutheran groups.Presbyterian is "representative" with presbyters or elders providing the oversight of local churches and pastors. This model includes the Presbyterian Church (USA), Christian Reformed Church, the Assemblies of God, and others.Congregational is "independent" with the pastor providing the oversight of the local church without any external ecclesiastical authority (or regional district) as found in the other two models. This model includes churches such as the Southern Baptists, General Baptists, Churches of Christ, and other independent churches. (The fourth view is an offshoot of this model but with a plurality of pastors as the authority instead of a single pastor).If you are considering a denominational change, particularly for leadership reasons, then this book is a must read. It gives insight into how denominations function and why. It will confirm which model best fits your style and goals. Some pastors enjoy climbing ecclesiastical ladders within a denomination, while others enjoy their exclusive focus on the local church. It may save some pastors years of frustration fighting red tape, while birthing vision in others who desire to oversee a region of churches. It is well written and researched.

This is a solid introduction to the topic of church governance or polity. It gives a bit of a skewed perspective, and unfortunately doesn't represent global Christianity but rather it's conservative, Western variety (two writers are Southern Baptists). Nevertheless, if you're just getting into the discussion this is a good place to start.

Very good book on differing church government. I really enjoyed the comprehensive and biblical treatment by Doctor Patterson.

Great insight!!!

The author could have been a bit more forthcoming had he identified by title and introduction the fact that he was NOT really interested in answering the question, "Who Runs the Church?", but instead is compiling four accounts, only one of which he concedes is correct. He should have just stuck to and explanation of his own beliefs, and just titled the book, "The Way the Church Should Be Run, According to Me."

This book was read with a critical eye. I found it to be very informative and insightful. The comparing and contrasting of the different structures in the protestant churches and how they justify their theologies; how they are more in line with the mind of God as opposed to the Eastern Orthodox was very interesting.

I had NO IDEA that teachers' unions had this kind of control--over EVERYBODY in the education system! This was an easy ready, but an alarming one at the same time. I have a lot of kids and have been exposed to a TON of teachers. Most seem like the teachers I met in this book--totally dedicated to their craft, genuinely love their kids, spend tons of their own money on extra stuff for the classroom, want to see every child succeed past their own unique challenges, etc. With such dedicated teachers, I never understood why national reports always talk about schools failing our kids. We hear about it every year and it seems to be getting worse. Teachers never seemed to mention the workplace dynamics shared in the book--until I started asking some individually, if they were aware of this. Then, WHOA! Everyone's got a story--and they sound eerily familiar!Seems to me that the union clamp-down on teachers trying to improve student learning, engage parents effectively, build-up teacher morale, etc. is really crippling education. I can't believe the shennanigans they use to run good people and great teachers out of schools, parents off of school boards, and more. No school seems safe from their grip. How can we expect our kids to behave better when this is the leadership model in our schools? This is nonsense and has to stop.I see the big picture now...unions are trying to duct-tape the mouths of anyone who dares to speak out. They have a ton of money at stake here. In the book, I learned that where I live, teachers unions are the biggest financial political spenders--twice as much as big pharma!!! THAT'S HUGE! And, now I see how our elections are being shaped by their big $$ and political agenda and it makes me MAD! In Chapter 16, Friedrichs makes an audacious suggestion and I think it's brilliant! After reading the book, I've decided to buy a copy for all the teachers in my life and my kids' lives. Friedrichs is one courageous lady!If you want to see a revolution in education in this country, I think the message in this book could make one possible--as long as people are willing to actually stand against Goliath. I am. Are you?

First-time author Friedrichs absolutely hits it out of the park with her expose on state and national teachers unions. It's hard-hitting, well-written and completely engaginag. I appreciate Rebecca putting this information in such a readable format....more and more people are learning how unions are damaging our schools. All readers should be warned, however, not to read the book before bed because it's so infuriating! Seriously, the only thing I'm upset with this author about is my bouts of insomnia while reading her book! But change is coming, and Standing Up to Goliath is heating up the debate. So grateful!

5 stars is not enough! should be 10 stars! Rebecca tells it very forcefully! Teachers have suffered tremendously just to maintain the career that they love while the Unions steal tremendous amounts of $$ from them to buy legislation and corrupt this country in ways that are totally shocking! Free speech for the unions and not for teachers who are fighting to keep the children of this country from being abused. The unions don't care at all for the kids! its all about the $$ The Union leaders pocket the big bucks and your kids pay the altimate price

This book is a wonderful read. It contains dozens of real stories about how the state and national teacher's unions have created an atmosphere of fear and bullying among the union membership just to keep control of those millions of dollars in dues. Very sad state of affairs but the truth will set us free. These stories are written with a loving, yet direct, style that will make each reader stop and rethink how our public schools are being controlled and how we can change this negative culture.

Packed with testimonials of parents, teachers, and students that braved the Union bullies to fight for kids. Are we asking? “What About the kids”? Will we let fear keep us from realizing their dreams. Do you know a teacher that needs to be encouraged and educated at the Goliath destroying their dreams of teaching?

Not for me. I was expecting a rich, story. This is a history book. Not my style of reading. Too dry. Sorry!

I have read this book 2 or 3 times and it is still on the shelf where I can grab it. I traveled to Mongolia in 1994 and camped with nomads near the Kherlen River where they told me Genghis Khan was born, and I met some amazing tough Mongolian women, perhaps they were the great great grand daughters of Genghis Khan? For women who like to read about women in history who made history, and perhaps for people who need some help realizing how competent women can be as rulers of empires- this is the book.

Ordinarily, I would put a reaction to another reviewer in a comment after his/her post. But I think that the point I am making is important enough to have its own post. The information I am putting here was taken from Weatherford's Acknowledgments at the end of the book. When younger, I usually ignored introductions, forewords, prefaces, and acknowledgements. It is a severe mistake to do so. Surprisingly important information is often contained within these sections of the book.I have to say that my first reaction to the pen and brush drawings was delight. I was impressed with the apparent simplicity, the grace, and the essence and skill of the drawings--so much so, that I have thought about taking them from the book and putting them in simple frames to hang side by side. I have never felt this way before about an illustration.Afer reading the acknowledgments, I am even more impressed! They are 'name-drawings!' That is, the brushstrokes not only capture the essence of the queen, but her name is also included, coded, into the drawing. Now that is remarkable! And it makes the illustration even more important and impressive. The cover is, to me, appropriate, and well done. Since the book is about the Mongol Queens, it depicts perhaps the greatest/most powerful/effective of them. She has abandoned her headdress and put on a warrior's helmet. She is horseback, as a warrior had to be, and she is in the act of firing her arrow. It says so many important things about her.I don't want to insult the reviewer who was disappointed in the drawings, but I surely think that these are superb and support the book beautifully. I liked the drawings anyway a lot!) but reading the acknowledgements gave me great appreciation of them.

This was a book I could hardly put down! While there were some spaces inbetween the stories of mongol women where the focus was more on the male leaders, the extra information was needed to put the stories of these powerful women into context. Also, a lot of information about these women have been lost over time, so as it is, it is a great representation of the information that remains about them. Overall this was an engaging and delightful book that especially hit its stride in the last 3rd. I would highly recommend this book.

Incredible book with great insights even for a Mongol like myself. In addition to writing so eloquently and making the book a fun read, Jack has done in-depth research where he is able to justify and explain corrections to some of the prior misunderstandings. What was so obviously shown in the book was how Mongol empire rose and fell based on ability to come together or inability to do so. Jack brought to life the key Mongol Queens of history one by one with their circumstances motivations and actions. Interestingly this is almost as much leadership book as is history book.

His book is an eye opener about the reign of Gengis Khan, the local customs of his time, and most of all the role women played in his succession. There was a lot more going on in the world than our ethnocentric Western history education leads us to believe. Great book.

This significantly researched book added an all but forgotten layer to the history of the great Mongol nation established by Ghengis Khan. In the novels I have read about famous Khans from Ghengis to Kublai, their wives were often seen as powerful advisers, but nothing was ever mentioned about the legendary daughters of Ghengis Khan who ruled the Mongol nation when his sons failed to rise to the occasion. Centuries later, Munduhai, a woman or Ghengis's tribe, assumes the reins of power and resurrects the Mongol nation after centuries of decline. I was most impressed at the level of research here and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the Mongol nation and its bold, determined women Khans.

This is a really good YA novel. What I like is how it peels back the life of an awful dictator and shows that he had a loving family that just thought of him as "daddy". Told from the perspective of the Tyrant's daughter who flees to the US with her mom and brother after coup, Carleson's novel shows her introduction to western culture, shows how the US government really only understands or cares about the surface conflict, and depicts how she is viewed in the same light as the revolutionaries and peasants from her own country by the west. YA stuff can be tough but I think Carleson danced across the fine line between relatable light-hearted not-belonging high school stuff and the intricacies of foreign affairs. Two thumbs up.

A CIA operative whisks a dictator's family out of the country when the tyrant's brother grabs power. In a flash the blood-stained widow and her two children shift from a life of secure luxury to humdrum apartment life in suburban Washington D.C. Laila, the murdered leader's 15-year old daughter, tells the story through the eyes of a young, very intelligent, and aristocratic middle-eastern woman experiencing American-style freedom and the high-school social scene for the first time. An astute observer and articulate narrator, one might imagine her modeled on other near-eastern female political leaders educated in the west (Golda Meir - U. Wisconsin, Indira Ghandi - Oxford, and particularly Benizar Bhutto - Harvard/Oxford).I found this book fascinating on many levels. The basic story line focuses on Laila's observations, relationships and cultural challenges as she acclimates to her new surroundings. Author J.C. Carleson, a Cornell U. psychology graduate as well as a former intelligence operative, crafts engaging dialog filled with subtle insights and perspectives. As other reviewers mention, there is a good deal of teen drama, but it is not overdone. On the contrary, Laila's interactions with her peers are believable, help build her character, and add to the suspense about how this bright young woman will evolve. This, however, is only the top layer of a more complex story simmering beneath the surface.Scene shifts from chapter to chapter at times feel contrived, as in too abrupt or unexpected. One gets the sense of a movie or a play that is a bit too carefully scripted. There are only a few characters whom we get to know well. Others, important ones, are vaguely described and left to imagination to fill in the details. The same is true for events. I would like more background to make the story line more understandable. However, I think this patchwork of facts, people and events mirrors the real world as seen by a spy. You must make sense of things based on incomplete information. In this regard, Carleson does an excellent job of putting the reader in the shoes of a spook!The bottom line is that I really like this story for its compelling main character, clever dialog, plot development and surprises, and especially for it's unique cultural perspective. Anyone following current events through the timeframe of 9/11 through the Arab Spring to today will see the parallels and gain new insights. As a work of literature it is outstanding as well.

The Tyrants Daughter is written for young adults, but older adults will enjoy it too. It is the story of Laila, daughter of a dictator (a king who isn't a real kind) of some unknown, but obviously Middle Eastern and rather strict Islamic country, who has to flee with her mother and her brother when her father is killed in a coup. While her mother is plotting for return home, she has to go to school to school in the US. The pitfall for cliches is obvious: culture shock, followed by the excitement about liberation from her oppressive culture. But the writer, a former CIA-agent, doesn't fall for such simple pitfalls. Laila wrestles to match her image of her kind father with the image of a ruthless dictator that the outside world has, and she struggles with the role her mother is playing. But she also has to make choices, and her choice probably would not be the reader's one. Too often, people presume that in the end we all are the same and that the choice for liberty and personal freedom is the obvious one. This books illustrates beautifully that such is not the case.

Loved this book! The fact that it was written by a former CIA agent who dealt with countries, such as the unnamed country in the book added validity to the story, because it seemed like she put some firsthand accounts into the novel. The story follows a girl named Laila, who has been displaced from her home country, where her father ruled, because her father was assassinated. Laila believed her father to be a wonderful and loving person, but soon learns that what she believes may not be what everyone else does. Not only that, throughout the book she has to try to figure out what is actually true, and who is telling the truth. She also has to learn how to reconcile her beliefs (never fully stated in the book, but it can be assumed she is from an Islamic faith) and he country's beliefs with those of America. It is a fast paced book, with some turns and twists. I had to re-read parts because the twists often come very quickly and some are very subtle. I highly recommend this book to everyone, YA and adults.

Probably the best book out there for building your own earth-sheltered home, but I felt it was lacking.I understand that the author offers private consulting to clients and runs a building school for earth-sheltered house design and construction, but I get the impression that the book purposely omitted some details for this reason. There were maybe three structural schematics in the book, none of which was complete. I get that the intent was to explain the "How-To" and give all of the intellectual tools necessary to design and build on your own, but I think a larger reference section with at least one complete structural schematic would have been useful.The color pictures were nice. I would have purchased an all-color photo edition of the book if it was offered, as some of the construction photos are hard to make out in black and white.

Let me start by saying this was an excellent book. Well written, to the point, detailed descriptions of what he has done and gives the knowledge to build your own. However, there were a couple things I would have liked more info on. The book could greatly benefit from giving more designs and or blueprints. This is more a guide to teach you how to design your own house rather than instructions on how to build already designed homes. I also feel like it could benefit from a guide section where you simply fill in the numbers you measure to calculate load, etc. It gives you the formulas you need in the apendix, but you will need to know how to do algebra. Having an easy plan/worksheets to assist your build would have been very helpful and cut down on my time (former math tutor) spent calculating my load.

This book is well written and has a lot of nice glossy pictures to go along with the explainations. The book explains all the aspects of how to build an under ground house. Which is a great concept unless you live in California and have to deal with Title 24 of the building codes which make this type of house just about impossible to build here. Nevertheless I would highly suggest this book for any buildiers library for the chapters on foundations, timber framing .and other aspects of building as they can still be applied to an above ground home as well.

The majority of info in this book applies also to houses which are partly subterranean or even above grade. Lots of information about foundations, floors, walls, roof construction and green roofs. Note that the earth sheltered houses in this book are in general not tucked away in a hill side or something. They're integrated in the landscape, in the soil, but there's not a huge earth load on top of them.The calculations in the book are very helpful when considering timber dimensions, roof load and much more. Don't be alarmed: it's only a small part of the book and if you're really not into numbers, just skip these parts.The writer is highly experienced, having build two houses. He shares his findings and faults with you, which is definitely very valuable. You may be put off somewhat by the extensive use of concrete and synthetic insulation, especially when you prefer natural materials, like me. Still, the book offers inspiration and information and often other, more ecologically sound materials can be used in stead of the concrete and Styrofoam.

Everything one needs to know to create an earth-sheltered home, all in one book! The only thing it doesn't cover is working with the building codes and permit process if one wants to have such. From design, to site prep, foundation, floor, external walls, timber-framing, waterproofing, insulation, drainage, living roofs, exterior finishes, and interior features, it covers it ALL! It even goes into the livability and function of such homes. And as a publication of Mother Earth News, it provides a wealth of resources for sourcing materials needed as well. One book - it's all in here!

I was extremely disappointed in the ebook content and exhibits of how to, who does, etc., is not dealt with or expanded upon effectively. I would like to have my money back for it does not do what it was advertised to illustrate....It does not meet the expectations as advertised.

While the author offer a great deal of information on the subject much of this is useful only from an academic standpoint and not so much from a do it yourself one. I love the ideas this thing has given me but I can't help but feel I'd be getting more out of this if I were already a professional contractor. The author has a habit of bogging the text down with too much technical jargon, this might be great for a text book to a class on the subject now that I think about it.It has given me plenty of practical and useful questions to ask both myself and the professional I'll be hiring for the job. Overall not too shabby but not too great either.

Good advice and good ideas, i prefer Michael Reynolds “earthship” design as he has MUCH MORE design experience than Rob Roy. Still, Rob has good advice.

Leo Lionni created a baffling, even maddening, encyclopedic compendium that describes, illustrates, arrays, and summarizes a host of imaginary plants---his parallel botany. Besides the detailed descriptions of these odd plants, Mr. Lionni, who is best known for his various children's books, rendered numerous illustrations of the various parallel plants. But he doesn't stop here: 23 figures and photographs of various scientists, researchers, explorers and parallel plants together paired with another 32 plates or charcoal or pencil drawings fortify the seeming reality of the world of parallel botany. (Keep in mind that a number of these plants are not visible.) The end notes to the chapters add more authenticity, and I assume, that many of the publications cited are real. The only component lacking is an index.There are layers and layers of complexity to this spoof, for Mr. Lionni draws the reader into more than the facts and lore of his creations by also intertwining issues about philosophy, language, and the scientific method. He presents multiple points of view bantered by experts in this subject matter, and this debate enlivens the discussion. He firmly roots the research by drawing upon imaginary but real-sounding folk tales and legends, made more real by invoking actual historical figures. Very interesting history. I attended Dolores myself from first to seventh grade in the mid-fifties until the regime closed down in 1961. Then I was sent by my parents with the other Pedro Pans to foster care in the USA. Although a generation apart from Fidel Castro my experience at Dolores was much the same. It provided discipline, advanced teaching techniques and careful individual nurturing. That seems to have backfired with a narcissist like Fidel but, with me, I found myself already well ahead of my fellow students in the USA despite my then still limited commandand of English (which we'd been taught from early on). I thank and laud Mr Symmes for an outstanding research job and his courage while writing it.

one of NYTimes best books of the year in 2007..look up the review by Guy Martin which was glowing and gave great insights about why its so good. Author approaches biography like an investigative journalist, noticing how small events, or even passing glances, can do so much to shape a personality .

While I enjoyed the book thoroughly (am preparing for a trip to Cuba), I found the author's skipping around style a bit troublesome. The background on the Castro family was particularly helpful. I particularly enjoyed the sections that dealt with the differences between the "boarding" students and the day students and their respective lives in Santiago de Cuba.

I thought it jumped around, sometimes repeated, and was a bit too long for my liking. I liked the human interest aspect of where the boys came from and ended up. Knowing the outcome, I skipped details of the Bay of Pigs invasion.

Absorbing study of a Jesuit boy's school at which the Castro boys were students. The point of view is that of his fellow classmates and others who attended the school. It's a tribute to a now forbidden school regimen. The book details the post Dolores lives of many of the graduates both in the US Cuba and elsewhere. Of general interest as we approach the post- Fidel era.

Reading this gave me a better sense of Fidel, Raul and their classmates at Dolores. It took a lot of pages before the reader had a chance to understand the origin of the revolution and the impact on the Cuban people.

This is a wonderful book that explores the historical and social background of the success of a communist regime on an island ninety miles from the U.S. The author reports extensively on the school that Castro attended, and interviews several of his classmates, but this is only a microcosm of Cuban society at large. He has done a lot of homework to capture the Cuban mentality and society, from the 1930's right on up to the present. After 48 years, I finally understand, thanks to this book, what the social and political factors were which resulted in this oppressive regime being so wildly successful in capturing the support of the majority of its citizens, us exiles notwithstanding.This is a must read for any Cuban expats, their offspring, and also anyone having any notion of setting up a business or any roots in Cuba after democracy creeps in.

interesting in that it is about a time I remember well. It is about Castro as a boy...his friends...his ideas...what happened to all those people during and after the revolution. leads to questions about what is happening now?
