About the Author

Larry Newman is the Founder and Director of Children's Music Workshop. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education, cum laude degree from Temple University's College of Music, a California teaching credential and a Master of Arts in Music Performance from Eastern Illinois University. Formerly an instrumental music teacher in the Philadelphia School District, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Santa Monica-Malibu Public Schools, Mr. Newman has supervised music programs in more than eighty public and private institutions from the Kindergarten through college levels. His rich diversity of experience includes schools from East L.A. to Malibu and from South Central L.A. to the San Fernando Valley. Larry Newman was the recipient of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' 62nd Annual Los Angeles area Emmy award for Children/Youth Programming. Mr Newman wrote, directed and produced the All Schools Elementary Honor Orchestra shows which have aired nationally and feature students from more than two dozen Children's Music Workshop school programs. This was Mr. Newman's third Emmy win. He also received Emmys in 2009 and 2008 for those honor orchestra broadcasts and was most recently nominated in 2011 for a fourth Emmy for Orchestra Kids 2010. In 2009, Mr. Newman was honored by the Los Angeles City Council at City Hall for his contributions to music education in Los Angeles. He was also featured on CityView's Channel 35 series, "Faces of LA". Mr. Newman received the 2006 Lori Petrick Excellence in Education Award from the Palisades Charter Schools Foundation. The award is underwritten by the Boone Foundation - a philanthropic group whose mission is to support "passionate people who provide excellent programs to youth". Larry Newman was also one of 40 teachers nominated for the 2007 25th Annual BRAVO Award, established in 1982 by the Music Center of Los Angeles County to recognize individuals for innovation and excellence in arts education. Aggregate tables can improve the performance of a data warehouse by hundreds or thousands of times.This book explains how to work with aggregates, and -- this was the most interesting part -- how to make it transparently, so the users don't have to know that they are querying aggregates.I strongly recommend this book!

This book answers the question of how can I make my data warehouse queries run faster. There is no magic to this, just pre-compute the data that you want to query and store that in your data warehouse. That is what is meant by 'aggregates' in this book. Of course that is easier said than done. The book covers issues like what to pre-compute and how to use the aggregate. It also has a nice introductory section on how to load a data warehouse with aggregates.

Chris does a great job of laying out both the good and bad associated with using aggregates as a means to support Business Intelligence and Hierarchical-type queries within a Data Warehouse environment. As a disciple of Ralph Kimball's Chris kept true to the doctrine and helped the reader understand why he recommended the tacts he did throughout the manuscript. The material was easy to follow and his illustrations were clear representations of the material being presented. I especially liked that he added platform-specific hints and scenarios to tailor the material to the reader's environment. While I do not necessarily agree that building aggregate tables are the solution to many of the challenges in a Business Intelligence use of Data from a Data Warehouse, I do feel that Chris' book is a great place to start to learn the challenges and start down the path of solution to the problem. Add on material might include mention of other solutions that are not manual that also address the same challenge - such as the software package from HyperRoll.

I must confess that I was skeptic before reading the book, because I thought that it could not add very much to Kimball's books. However, I was wrong: this turned out to be a very useful book. Not only it contains the most detailed explanation of DW aggregates available, but it also contains a very good discussion of the loading process for various types of dimensions and facts, which forms the bulk of data warehouse "back room processing".One more final plus: the author completely adopts the Kimball approach to Data Warehousing, so this book fits very nicely with other books from Wiley's describing Kimball methodology.

Recently, a colleague recommended "Mastering Data Warehouse Aggregates" and I have already applied many of the powerful techniques so ably presented by Mr. Adamson. Although experienced in the implementation of the Dr. Kimball's star schema approach, I have never been able to exploit its full performance potential - until now.Despite the complexity of the material, the book is concise and easy to understand. NOTE: Adamson's approach is not tied to any proprietary HW or SW product. The book guided me from design fundamentals to a performance-optimized upgrade of an existing data warehouse. And it didn't take a long time to do it, either.If you're a performance-oriented data warehousing professional, you'll find this book deserves a place on your book shelf of essential references. Highly recommended.

The introduction to this book lays out a good premise, but honestly I couldn't make it through the first chapter which was filled with nuggets of critical scholarship and liberal theology. For some I'm sure that will be a plus. For me it was enough to realize that I have enough stress in my life that I don't need to deal with the stress of reading a book I have to argue with on every page.Page 8 ... after recounting the description of Solomon's temple and how everything was made of gold or covered with gold ... "the temple was clearly intended to reflect on honor on Solomon and on his regime." He's arguing here on the basic of the 1st commandment and that the gold in the temple was intended to be satisfying a consumerist desire by Solomon rather than trying to create something that was breathtakingly beautiful in worship of our glorious God. (And where did the gold come from, anyway?)Page 8 ... very next paragraph. "In the modern world, Karl Marx reflected most deeply on the compelling power of commodity." I don't know how many people will consider Karl Marx to be a great authority. How does the one who called religion the opiate of the masses suddenly become an authority on the proper interpretation of the first commandment and a Christian view of possessions?Page 9 ... Brueggemann refers to Deuteronomy as "what is likely a late exposition of the first two commandments." In other words, Deuteronomy was not written by Moses, but is a much later work. For those who hold to Biblical inerrancy this is unacceptable. Matthew 19:7-8 and Romans 10:19 both clearly attribute Deuteronomy to Moses. 1 Kings 2:3 seems to attribute at least Deut 17:14-20 to Moses.Page 12 ... "The reality of restlessness in our contemporary society is obvious and epidemic. The identification of that restlessness perhaps goes back to the categories of Martin Luther concerning 'faith and works,' with the accent on 'works' indicating the need to produce, perform, and qualify for the goodness of God. It is an easy move to take that Reformation accent on 'works' and see in our current social restlessness evidence of not yet being good enough or having done enough." .... WHERE TO EVEN BEGIN? How does anybody read Luther (or any of the Reformers) and come away with man's need to qualify for the goodness of God? That is the exact OPPOSITE of Luther and Calvin and their constant drum beat of grace, grace, grace, grace. I think that here Brueggemann is taking Weber's fallacious and discredited theory of the 'Protestant Work Ethic' and presenting that as the actual view of the Reformers.If Brueggemann can get so much wrong in the first 12 pages of the book, I had no interest in finishing the book. And in fact, I have no interest in anybody else reading it either. The book didn't go up for sale ... it went straight in the garbage.

We read this book as a Lenten book study in our church. It is a short book full of thought provoking ideas. The author writes about the importance of Sabbath in this busy world in which we live and the resistance of Sabbath by society. In addition he provides a fascinating look at the Ten Commandments in the light of Sabbath. I recommend this book to everyone who struggles to rest and still the mind; isn't that all of us?

In 105 pages the author covers more ground ibn more detail than some authors do in 305 pages. Looking at the commandment "Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy" he shows how this is a radical new idea. Moses is telling a generation of people who only have heard of Egypt to rebel and do absolutely nothing more than rest. Even he Animals ae o rest. Rest means rest - no cooking, feeding and watering animals, thee are no bricks to make and it's not necessary to even dreams of such a things. Sabbath means TOTAL rest. Wile /Brueggeman is not verbose, he is a typical German theologian who never uses one word when five will suffice!

Well written, good things to say. The think I didn't like was each topic in each chapter is usually stressed 3 times, so each chapter could have been 1/3 the size and still conveyed the essential message

When we stop trying to control others, we can better harness our energies to work with what we can influence: our own thoughts and behaviors.This book is written in an anecdotal style that makes for easy reading. It is geared somewhat to the clinician who works with people undergoing great difficulties. However, anyone who finds Choice Theory a useful paradigm would gain greater understanding through reading this book. By demonstrating how the same perspective can be brought to bear on a wide variety of human suffering, Glasser shows the effectiveness of his theory in a very practical way. I feel far more confident in working in this paradigm after reading this book.

I'll admit my bias up front: I am a Glasser fan. So this book was already a 3-4 star read before I cracked cover. That aside, this book is a great read for those who are interested in a play-by-play of how to use choice theory/reality therapy in your practices. Some of the examples are used in other books but Glasser has added a lot more with regards to his own personal thoughts regarding the therapeutic process and much more detail.This book is less about the education of Choice Theory/Reality Therapy, and more on applications in practice. If you are someone who is looking at this book for that purpose I would suggest looking at some of the other Choice Theory material. This is for people who are wanting to implement Choice Theory into your practice.

The author of this book believes that everything we do is a choice, including the effects of having a mental illness. This book advocates for no psychotropic medications, because evevery urging we do is a choice. I do not agree with this stance. People with psychotic disorders DO NOT choose to be psychotic. But to each their own. This book just isn’t for me.

I have many of John Maxwell's books in my library and this is one of his best! Very easy to read with inspiring stories. Fantastic Book. This book is not overly complicated and it has plenty reading potential to pick this book up again and again. This is one of those books that should be part of your life long library. I've read Two of John C. Maxwell's books now and I am loving the content. It's not overly complicated easy to read and understand with out a lot of repeat through out the book like other self help books.

This book addresses the all important aspect of living in, and properly using, the here and now. It helps us to place energy, focus, and proper attitude on today. It is best summed up in a quote by Carl Sandburg from the book, "Time is the most valuable coin in your life. You and you alone will determine how that coin will be spent. Be careful that you do not let other people spend it for you." With all the distractions around us flashing for our attention, it's no small wonder we live lives far below our dreams. This is a good book to help us not waste another one of those coins that will never be ours to spend again.

This book contains a bunch of common sense information for you to follow to make yourself a better person. I believe the book has too many focus areas to the point that each gets diluted on the way. To really get something out of the book, I would start with the conclusion chapter and conclusion to each of the 12 subjects in the book and work backwards from there

I enjoy reading and trying to improve. I especially enjoy John Maxwell because he, like no other man of today, has helped me to think. Yes, I know we all think, but Dr. Maxwell has given me insights that never crossed my mind and really taught me how to THINK! I have learned about leadership, relationships, and now, with this book, building blocks for tomorrow. My only regret it that I didn't have this book forty years ago, when I was going into college. I honestly thought he had covered all the bases of life, but this book is, perhaps, his best book yet. It definitely is something we can all use. It is the perfect gift for the graduate, or even newlyweds. The lessons taught in this book are a MUST READ for everyone. Rick Warren's "The Purpose Driven Life" helped us discover what life is all about. John Maxwell teaches us how to discipline those purposes into our lives and make each day our "masterpiece". DON'T MISS THIS BOOK!!!

I have been buying cookbooks, not for the recipes but for ideas and new ways of cooking. I for a long time basically lived on pasta and hamburger meat while I was trying to get over cigarettes. I gained a 100 pounds and developed type2 diabetics. I now plan each meal around a vegetable or two. Boiling, roasting or any manner that will allow me to use minimum amounts of fats and starches. Still haven't found a low carb desert worth the trouble of making or eating.Got a lot of good ideas from this book and have enjoyed the results - every bite.

Not very detailed or explanatory which surprised me considering CIA books. The information could be found on any generic website. Recipes were redo's of other CIA books except with substituted healthy replacements. good book if you need a lot of tofu recipes.

The Culinary Institute should know better. This book lacks proper proof reading and the recipes leave much to be desired. For example, Rosemary Chicken with no rosemary? Really? This is one of several examples throughout the book that leave one laughing. There are also flagrant punctuation errors which I find amusing. I am no English major but I do expect quality work. If you must get this book for your higher education via the culinary institute you are attending, then so be it. If not, I would consider other alternatives.

Would highly recommend any book from the CIA, especially the newer versions, the book includes hundreds of helpful and very descriptive recipes with nutritional information. Also there's a lot of helpful literature in the book about nutrition and living a healthy lifestyle, the book includes cooking techniques and several pictures of tools needed for each dish.

This is history “from the bottom-up,” bringing Benjamin Lay’s unique and amazing story as a hunchbacked, dwarf abolitionist from Essex County in England out of obscurity. Rediker shows that not only was Lay in the vanguard of the abolitionist movement, but as a compassionate humanist, a man for our own times. In addition to being a strident abolitionist, Lay was a vegetarian, an animal rights advocate, and an opponent of the death penalty. After the death of his wife Sarah in 1735, he moved into a cave near Abington, Pennsylvania, where he produced most of his own food and made his own clothing. He was well-known in the Philadelphia area – Benjamin Franklin published his book in 1738, and he was notorious among those who were the object of his wrath (namely slave-owners) at Quaker meeting houses. Lay does not seem to have been overly concerned about being a “little person,” although it seems he had to endure some mockery because of it. Nevertheless, it certainly did not curtail his radical activism. The thesis of the book is straightforward: Benjamin Lay brought together numerous strands of radicalism in his effort to condemn as the devil’s own device the institution of slavery. Lay brought religious, philosophical, working-class, abolitionist, and commoner perspectives to the table. The fact that these are all present and expressed through a single individual demonstrates, Rediker notes, that they can all be part of the same consciousness. The evidence the author presents for this is abundant. Benjamin Lay was born into the radical Quaker tradition, a third generation Quaker born in 1682 in Copford, Essex. By the time Benjamin reached adulthood, Quaker practices had toned down considerably from their early “inner light” visionary practices. Lay gave this practice new life, especially after he married Sarah Smith, who was also a hunchbacked dwarf. The spark that lit Lay’s (and Sarah’s) abolitionist fervor was a sojourn to Barbados in 1718. Two years on that hellish sugar island in the Caribbean set the couple, especially Benjamin, on his lifelong abolitionist path. The atrocities they witnessed defy description. To help alleviate the suffering, the Lays started a meeting for the enslaved, eventually calling down the wrath of the planter elite. Their subsequent campaign against slavery embraced Quaker practices from the early days of the religion. The author elaborates on three of these practices: 1) Public rants against ministers; 2) The refusal of “Hat Honor” (i.e., not removing one’s hat during the Quaker meeting); and, 3) The use of provocative street theater (Rediker opens the book with a stunning example of this). The author also shows how Lay’s working-class background allowed him to connect with enslaved people who were routinely worked to death. Lay’s work-life began as a shepherd, where he found peace in nature and the herding of sheep, no doubt a nurturing influence. He then trained as a glover, difficult and monotonous work that would have helped him identify with enslaved people who were forced to perform endless rote tasks throughout their short lives. He maintained some proficiency in this trade all of his life; Rediker notes that glover’s tools and supplies were in significant number in his will.Eventually, Lay made his way to London. There, the monotony of gloving led him to take up the life of a sailor, which brought him into contact with the diverse “motley crew” of that profession. Experiences in the world of sailors, along with his later trip to Barbados led him to de-racialize humanity. In his writing, Lay referenced the Bible, specifically Acts 17:26, which proclaims that all people are “made of one Blood.” In his 1738 book, All Slave-Keepers That Keep the Innocents in Bondage, Apostates, Lay did not use the word “race,” instead he used the less divisive word “color.” This reflected his experience with the motley crew of the eighteenth-century sailing ship.After immigrating to Philadelphia in 1732, Lay continued his abolitionist activism. Religion and politics merged with philosophy in his life-long self-education. Learning Lay’s worldview is an education not only in Quaker antinomianism, but Greek asceticism, particularly that of the Cynic philosophers. Most influential of the former was William Dell, a radical Chaplain in the New Model Army during the English Civil War. In Philadelphia, Lay had dabbled in bookselling, and Dell’s works were one of Lay’s chief offerings. In his books, which Lay highly praised, Dell advocated antinomianism – the notion that no authority is higher than that of one’s own “inner light” or inner voice. Dell also encouraged civic education for the masses in order that they, rather than a socio-economic elite, would and could wield power. These points would have been profoundly upsetting to the elites of seventeenth-century England.The library in Benjamin Lay’s cave also contained works of Greek philosophers, particularly those of the founder of Cynic thought, Diogenes, and his protegés Pythagoras, Crates, and Lucian. Rediker provides a thumbnail sketch of this worldview by defining a handful of crucial practices. These included parrhesia, the practice of speaking one’s mind regardless of how it will impact those in power. Autarkeia meant self-sufficiency without the baubles of material gain; askesis and karteria meant training in self-discipline and endurance, both mental and physical; and finally tuphos, where one severely challenged the notions of luxury, prestige, and wealth, considering them flaws in human character to be overcome. All of this, from antinomianism to Cynic philosophy was built on a commitment to treat others with love, which was to be given to all.Predictably, Marcus Rediker delved deep into the Quaker archives in both England and the U.S. He also made himself familiar with the historical literature on Quakers from this period, much of which was old ground for him. The book is written for the general public, but is erudite enough to appease the specialist. I personally loved both the book and getting to know Benjamin Lay three hundred years after his righteous fight for justice shook the Quaker world and, as Rediker argues, kick-started a Quaker abolitionist movement that, in turn, was the foundation of nineteenth-century abolitionism. During his lifetime, the Quaker dwarf was a giant in his way. His antinomianism, Cynic philosophy, and raw courage will be inspiring to those pursuing egalitarian justice today.

Brilliantly written biography of a passionate soul who was willing to do just about anything to sway his fellow Friends that Slavery was the greatest sin. While his efforts were frowned upon and caused him no end of the approbation of his community, they were memorable enough to ultimately contribute to the future abolition of slavery generations after his death.

A fascinating character, the subject of a well-written entertaining history.

With his usual graceful prose, Rediker has uncovered the life of Benjamin Lay, the first Revolutionary Abolitionist. Using a myriad of sources including Lay's writings, (and even though Lay's papers were destroyed), the author explores the reasons for Lay's strong convictions about slavery and his guerilla theater tactics in bringing to light the horrors of slavery. Explaining his radical Quakerism, his courage against wealthy elites, and vegetarianism, Rediker has captured Benjamin Lay's relevance to present day and for the future.

Very thoroughly researched history of America's first anti-slavery activist, the eccentric Benjamin Lay.I found no fault in this entertaining and well documented history.

I thought this book was well written and informative. Many books of this genre become nothing more than dissertations on the topic but this was entertain and so enlightening.
